Write or call to see him When The Professor Broadcasts It is popularly supposed that the reason insurance companies charge such a high premium rate on the lives of traffic policemen is owing to the ferocious and uncertain °be- haviour of Ford cars at traflic inter- sections... Similarly that anxious and prematurely aged look seen on the faces of studio announcers is said: by many to. be. directly attributable to the strain of supervising the conduct of professors at the microphone. Professors, asa class, seem to be fundamentally antagonistic to the broadcasting rites of the studio. The behaviour of any professior on his approach to the ‘“‘mike’’ is al- most. identical. In a -brown- study he advances, shepherded by the an- nouncer in the general direction of he. microphone, until, | arriving within three inches of it, he appears to beconie suddenly aware of its distributing presence, when he will, if the announcer is not prepared for such a move, immediately rebound toa position six feet in the ‘rear. From here he commences a mumble- jumble in a low. inarticulate voice, while the announcer and his as- sistant exert general pressure to. pro- pel him closer to the microphone. If the professor ‘is a distinguished gentleman with a string of letters after his name and the possessor of a hasty temper, this is about all. the improvement the studio announcer can effect. He, therefore, has to content himself by dancing about in the rear of the studio, wringing his hands, swearing softly, kicking the cat, and shaking his fist at the un-- conscious professor's back. An over-excited announcer (an ex-foot- ball player) has even. been known to take.a shért run, and, arriving just behind the professor, aim a-mighty swing with his. leg, altho happily, just before his foot made contact, a squad of cor- respondent in a daily paper recently enquired why’ there is such a large proportion of telephone operators in our mental homes. Here may be the reason. But to come back to the studio. . We have already told, what happens when the professor is distinguished. When, however, he does not have so many letters to his nainé and is.a junior or what you might call fledging professor, the announcer. adopts different tactics ‘To counteract’ the tendency of the professor to back.< away from the “mike,” an assistant is placed with a fixed bayonet near the small of bis back. The announcer also has cards. Specially printed as follows: ““Enunciate more distinctly,”’ in neat black type. ““Enunciate distinctly, for the love of mike,” in ‘large red type (a sort of SOS-call). “Speak up,”’ “speak more“ slowly,” “stop stuttering,’’ ‘open your mouth,’’ are specimens of. the rest pf the an- nouncer’s collection. Procedure is something: hke this: Protessor.is led in (sometimes carried in), assistant with bayonet. behind... Other as- sistants stand guard over exits. An- nouncer talks. Professor is given drink -of milk. fortified with a few drops of ‘old methylated.” A wild look comes into the professor's eye. At psychological. moment—assistant- administers prod with bayonet. Pro- fessor springs to the “‘mike’’ and begins his lecture. Announcer stands at side with cards and sandbag (sand- bag is to lay professor. out in case he attempts. to eat: up. microphone underinfluence of “‘old methylated’’). Sometimes announcer has no: need |. for cards. At others it requires a gentle hint with sandbag t6 call pro fessor’s attention to the card thrust before him Such is the hectic time the “staff have whencver a profe-sor_ broad- Is it any wonder, then,. that the office boy has strict orders never casts. . : to admit a strange professor unless accoupanied by a responsible person.
