Nation- alities of the World Canada’s certain destiny one of the great nationalities of the world, a member: of the British Com- monwealth .of Nations, but free .and independent in its administrative life, Viscount Willingdon detlared in an address before the Canadian Club: at Victoria. The Governor-General outlined his vision of the Empire, “an empire the like of which the world has never seen, an empire which, whatever pessimists may say, it is my firm be- lief that the more independent and free the various parts become in mat~ e ters of administration the closer wit Tog ct be the ties of. loyalty that bind them to the throne.” Britain, he said, is still full of life With the memory of the theatre holocaust, {n which some scores of | and vigor despite the troubles of post- Attle children were the victims, still fresh in their minds, the citizens of | war years. Lake and the surrounding terri- tory. - Aerial flying in this general region has assumed such importance. that 11 has been considered advisable to is- sue an “aeronautical map” for the special use of air pilots. This map, known as the Winnipeg District Aero- nautical Map, is printed in colors on the scale of 8 miles to an inch and covers an area from Winnipeg to a point about 50 mites. east of Kenora and from the latter place to the point where the Ontario-Manitoba boundary line turns in its ¢ourse from due north to. north-easterly. This area exhibits many variations but its most striking characteristic is the intricate maze of water features that are ste down in the vicinity of the Ontario-Manitoba boundary line and easterly therefrom. In order that the air pilot may at all times know his location from the grouna features below, all water. features are mapped that it is possible to show on the scale used. The-result is a net work of lakes and rivers that woula be confusing in their multiplicity if especial means were not taken to simplify thém. This is done, on the map, by indicating the regularly trav- elled water routes in a special color and. also in differentiating the poe waterways from the rest. The map, although designed paitie- ularly for use. of aviators, prove equally. serviceable to the gen- eral public. For those who wish to travel in this region, whether by dog team in winter or by canoe in sum- mer, it shows the features in much | greater detail than is usual for the | seale used. It may be obtained from the Topographical Survey Depart- ment of the Interior, Ottawa, for the ‘nominal price of 26 cents, or if de- sired in folder form, for 60 cents. | Eat Raw.
