*M T9 THB LIAS, L T TR* CUM PULL MH.ala, THBV MILL. BAMTT, ALTA., NOVEMBER 25. 1916 No. 40 Killed the Sheep ? Was it- a Two-Legged or a Four-Legged Coyote ? 'Tis a Burning Question Monday a conple of game wardens, re-enforced by a member of the local detachmefat of the R. N. W.M.P., visited several homes and places of business in Banff and unceremoniously searched the premises. In tbe majority of instances care was taken to ascertain that the man of the house was absent before visiting the premises. It appears that some game warden, or other sleuth, while pussyfooting about in the hills came npon the carcase of a dead sheep and at once jumped to tbe conclusion that sorai Acting upon this deduction, and without the formality of securing a search warrant, they- promptly made a raid upon tbe homes of citizens whom they, in their wisdom, suspected of being poachers or of having wild mutton in their possession illegally. The search was not productive of sense of the word. It is safe to add results, uo quarters of mutton be- ing found that could by tbe wildest stretch of the imagination be made to fit upon the carcase of the deceased sheep. The searchers are looking very wise and vaguely hinting thai they1 - h-a-**-e *-csrd np their alee TttP,** bwfr*. the owners of the premises search ed are not worrying simply wait ing for a show down. that there are houses in Banff where, had the men folks beeu at home, this unseemly searching -would not have taken place despite tbe wording of tb* Game Act. Thousands of men are laying down their lives to-day in Europe for tbe upholding of the very principles which the Banff game wardens are endeavoring to trample under foot. It is just sucb high-banded acts as this on the part of the Park officials that sic law-breakers on to break tbe laws, and cause the citizens generally to hold the game wardens, in utter contempt. This German method of protecting tbe game will never, in tbis western country, .secure the protection for the game that 99 out of every 100 of the residents desire. The sooner Ottawa gives the citizens of tbe Park the protection due them, the sooner will game be held sacred, more just laws be enacted and prosperity for everyone enter the Park gates. Banff Curling Club Notes A general meeting of the* club will be held in the club house at the new rink on Marten stre**,-.on Fri day evening, Dec. 1st. All mem- bers or prospective members please attend. Skips are request l to-complete their rinks without delay, and band -an tbe names to the secretary. While not upholding law-breakers in the Canadian National Park, nor, endorsing their acts in any shape or form, this paper voices the sentiment of the Park population when it asserts that the wholesale searching of private houses and hotels by game wardens and the R.N.W.M.P., without a search warrant duly signed by the proper authority, is un-British in every The Woman's Guild of St. George's church will hold a Sale of Work on Friday, Dec. 8th, in the Methodist church, commencing at 8 o'clock p.m. Refreshments will be served. Admission free. Proceeds for church building fund. W. Mather expects to have his skating rink ready Monday night, when tbe grand opening will take place. Trust account, N. K. Luxton (Continued on page 8) O. D. McMahon writes 'fronj Somewhere ia France, under date of Oct. 24, that he was enjoying a brief rest and nursing a fierce cold contracted in the fro: trenches. To-day' the weather is rainy and dirty, and I sincerely pity the boys in the trenches. People back home have no idea what the boys out here endure, and they stand up to their work without funking. Occasionally one hears a fervent cuss word about the weather, every other discomfort is taken as a matter course. The last time we were up the line we had a fine Fritz dug-out, furnished with round table, chairs, spring-bed, mirrors, etc. It-was sure some comfort to sleep in that bed. -' We-gtrnp the litres afain tov morrow. It is a hot old place, all right, the warmest ever dreamed of even. I saw Lorne Layng as he * *, a* bis way is to ibe trenches. Was glad to learn that his wound was a slight one, He passed thru our hands at tbe base hospital. ' 'Notice by the Crag and Canyon tbat Bessie Wilson has been married. Her husband's brother is in this corps and bunks next to me. He is some snorer o' nights, but a mighty good kid. . We have some singers in the bunch and during rest hours soine of the quartette work is simply great. 'Am not egotistical enough to express an opinion as to the progress or duration of the war, but the boys a'.l appear hopeful and very sanguine of success. Personally I am satisfied to be here doiug my bit, would not have it otherwise, although I must confess to a frequent longing for Banff and my W. Mitchell writes under date of Oct. 25, tbat he is well and happy doing his bit over in France. I had two small red flowers, plucked from tbe trench parapet, 50 yards from the German lines, which I intended sending you as a souvenir but some clumsy beggar put his foot on and squashed 'em. Talked with Lorne Layng, wbo passed through our dressing? station after being slightly wounded, for half an hour before be wa? sent to tbe base. 'We are billeted in atown which used to have a civilian population of 2,700, now it has a scant 60. But thete must be 100,000 soldiers, coming and going, always on the move day and night. One wonders where tbey are all coming from and whither they are going. Sometimes they are led by bands of music, at other times you hear them singing. They are always bright-eyed and cheerful looking. I think the infantry men's philosophy of keeping their troubles to themselves and meeting every turn of fate with a smile goes a long way towards keep-* ing them cheerful and maintaining the esprit de corps. A wounded soldier was brought into our dressing station yesterday covered by a German officer's great coat, from the inside pocket of w-hich I secured the handkerchief I am enclosing in this letter. It had never been used so you need have - no fear of germa. It is the only souvenir I can lay my hands on at present. Kindly remember me to all friends in Banff. C.P.R.
