Workshop on free trade. The panel, chaired by John Oldring, M.L.A. Red Deer South, consisted of Rt. Hon. Joe Clark M.P. Yellowhead and Secretary ot State for External Affairs, The Hon. Jim Horsman, M.LA Medicine Hat, Minister of Federal and Intergovernmental Affairs and the Hon. Larry Shaben, M.L.A Lesser Slave Lake, Minister ot Economic Development and Trade Each panel member gave his session of, the Conservative perspective and personal insight into the pending free trade agreement The panel was united in their assessment of the agreement - that free trade will enhance the diversification of Alberta's economy and strengthen our export potential creating job opportunities for all Canadians. Mr. Clark highlighted the fact that we now live and trade in aij, global village and we cannot isolate ourselves from decision, but we must be involved in all aspects of our future as a country and asa province. Federal and provincial representatives have had over 140 meetings as they have negotiated audience which consisted of delegates who have travelled from all corners of the province Questions ranged from concerns about fe grains, financial institutions, labour and ratification of the agreement before the November 1988 United State Senate elections Mr. Clark believes the agreement can be ratified before Scptember 1988 and that the US business community realizes that substantial gains are to be de on both: sides of the border. One example of how free trade will benefit the agricultural sector is in the canola oil market. The agreement will remove a. labelling restriction that has hindered Canadian access to the US market. This.will give a boost to as the Western Based industry that has already reached a billion dollar trading value. In his closing remarks, Mr. Shaben encouraged all Canadians to become knowledgeable about the provisions of the free trade deal and take the initiative to dispel myths regarding the agreement through simple and open dialogue. For those critics who condemn ade as a threat to Canadian vignty. Clark contends we did not enter negotiations as a mouse approaching an elephant. but as proud Canadians. The large attendance at the first session of the convention shows the enthusiasm and interest , that Albertans have regarding -the Canadian future of their province FOX DENTURE CLINIC E.S.P.
