Diary as I have mentioned a few times before in these Diary pages that I frequently receive a large envelope from my brother in Toronto. These envelopes do not contain long, newsy. family reports, but do come full of articles he has cut out of Toronto papers, that he thinks will be of interest to me. One Day in Advance in it for making . the watermelon/fruit centrepiece that I attempted (with much help) to put together for the Day. Care fund-raising Hawaiian party last year. Dinah' s shop is in the elite Yorkville area of Toronto, and is a gourmet shop and catering business, with the emphasis on party foods, After Gord puts short comments di five years she says p dple are them, pointing out the special parts he thought I might enjoy. His latest collection arrived at just the right time - he sent along a whole section from the Toronto Star about their recent (Rebruary 10) food show, in the Queen Elizabeth Building, at Exhibition Place, called TORONTO COOKS . I was particularly interested in it as I leave next week forthe food and beverage show, VIVA 88, being held this year in Vancouver, and this way I will have some idea of what was shown in Toronto, for comparison with the other far Western side of Canada. VIVA '88 will have many more exhibitors, from information I have already received, but due to its location, TORONTO COOKS have access to so many of the food writers that I read about in magazines or whose cookbooks I own, that it would have been wonderful to attend seeing them in person, and watching them demonstrate some of their specialties. mes One of these is Dinah Koo of Dinah s Cupboard. Her cookbooks, especially the one of the same name - Dinah's Cupboard - has the instructions Drop-In news A very successful valentine tea and bake sale was held in the Drop-In Centre on Saturday February 13. The hall was colorfully decorated in the valentine motif. The social committee wishes to express a sincere gratitude to everyone who donated items to the bake table, the response was wonderful. If this problem has touched you or your family why not talk with someone who cares entertaining more at home, and she was demonstrating some of her ideas for appetizers, including a miniature version of Peking duck. The original Peking duck consists of small pieces of the specially prepared duck, combined with shredded vegetables (usually carrots and onions) which are rolled in a thin pancake, and eaten with your fingers. By making this into a much smaller version, it is ideal as a starter. She also suggested another appetizer - one I have made quite often - of snow peas should be teamed very briefly, to bring out their bright green colour. They are then slit open down one side, and finely shredded crabmeat, lightly seasoned, is tucked into them. The same idea can be followed, using creamed cheese. The only problem I have had with them is in making them too far in advance. They are still edible, but lose their pretty green colour if held too long. A few hours will be OK, but I once tried to keep them overnight, and found out they did not look attractive. Bonnie Stern, cookbook author, cooking school instructor, and regular contibutor to leading food On Thursday, February 18 we held our regular monthly birthday party. A good crowd enjoyed ice cream and cake served by some of those who had birthdays in February. Don Arnestad favored us, with several piano selections ANGELA S DENTURE CLINIC LTD. 131 - 50 Avenue West Phone: 625-2427 Clareshoim (Tuesdays Fridays) Catch The Future / If you're a high academic achiever looking forward to a by Jean Hoare magazines, was forecasting a current cooking trend - she claims people are wanting more elegant-looking food, things that look complicated, but turn out to be easy.to make. By using a. food -processor, she was demonstrating the easy part of producing a Chocolate Pecan Torte - not an idea I will be looking for--when-- -putting together my menus for the 1200 calorie day meals The TORONTO COOKS show had two stages for live demonstrations, and for those who want to see everything, it would have kept them hopping, hurrying back and forth across the building. Regular readers of my favourite magazines, Canadian Living, * would recognize names such as Carol Ferguson, Margaret Fraser, Anne Lindsay, Kay Spicer and Patricia Jamieson. The well-known Edna Staebler was doing Hot Slaw from one of her many cookbooks - the ones that schmeck - the list goes on and on. A new name to me - Caribou Wild Rice - is one I will try and follow up, after reading a story about the lady who started the company. The rice is harvested in Saskatchewan, and the company was started by Dorothy Corscadden from her home in Unionville (just north of Toronto) five years ago as a hobby during retirement. She has now added a partner, Ellen Pocock, also 65 years old, and they distribute their packaged rice through what sounds like a list of the best shops in the city - including Dinah s Cupboard, mentioned above, and the Cullen Country . Barns. A nearly ' cardboard container of 175 g retails about 5.95. Wild Rice is one thing I can consider using for my Spa Menus - it is a nutritional, totally organic product, low. in fat, high in protein and rich in vitamin B. I prefer it mixed with other - things - onions, mushroomsetc,, as well as combining it with other kinds -of-riee, white or brown. This makes it less expensive, by stretching the wild rice, and for most people s tastes, more palatable. The paper also included a large advertisement by Panasonic. I mentioned in this column a few weeks ago that I had finally put a microwave oven in the kitchen at Driftwillow. However, not an ordinary microwave, but the latest model of the Panasonic MADAME GRILLE - which has four cooking methods - by microwaves, by radiant heat for baking and browning, a combination of microwave and radiant heat, or as the name indicates, by grilling or broiling. The advertisement in the Toronto paper says Join the Panasonic Million club and as a member you'll get exclusive Madame Benoit recipes and unlimited cooking, classes. I understand this is also available in Alberta (Panasonic is handled in Claresholm through Radio Shack) and the classes are given at the Stampeder Hotel in Calgary. Somehow, I think it would be wise to wait until after the Olympics are over before heading up there, for a lesson. Next week I'll tell you about the rest of the clippings from my brother. SPECIAL .
