Attempting to draw to the four foot, he left his shot a little short. Actually he left it approximately 90 feet short Grinding out of the hack, his rock barely made it to his own hogline (skip J. J. LeBrun was later heard to comment wryly, that at least he hit the broom ) Team-mate- Brian Dahl claimed Cliff was so light that he even had to sweep like hell to get it through their own house After he curled himself out of contention for mixed league honours, and offering our condolences, along with those of Percy Bysse Shelley, From the Hack presents: ELEGY FOR A CURLER I met a curler from the local rink Who said: Two vast and trunkless brooms of straw Stand on the ice... . near them on the boards, Half drunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown, And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command. Tell of a skip, and well whose passion shows) Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things, Of one who is to be replaced be the ROSE And on his sweater these words appear: My name is Doug Fletcher, king of curlers: Look on my curling, ye mighty and despair Nothing in the house remains. Round the decay Of that colossal boundless and bare The lone and level ice stretches far away. This time of the year sees many local and area bonspiels. How to survive them: all of course becomes the major problem for many curlers. Who better to ask then the Silver Fox , George Bishop? George feels that the first rule -to surviving any spiel is having the proper frame of wreck, mind when you enter. Are you curling after a brief absence. new theme song T could ready to curl as many as six Butch returned humming his have danced all night competitive games? Are you prepared to concentrate solely on curling from Thursday P.M. until late Sunday evening? If so The annual Meeting George suggests that you stay of the home Why spoil what could be Claresholm a great weekend by actually . . wanting to curl Minor Ball Association Next to actually going, the will be held on most important decision is who : to go with Here Silver Ae eee ee ow suggests looking for the qualities of cunning (ie. Jack Yorgason), brute stength (Slug Weatherhead), and flexibility (Marvelous Marv. Wobick). A cunning mind is needed to persuade ones better half that you are needed to curl for the fifth weekend in a row. Brute strength is needed to find an available table close to the bar especially in small country rinks. Flexibility is needed to explain why you arrived home at 3:00 a.m. when your last game- was at 6:00. p.m. the previous day Finally how about those spiels which require an overnight stay? George being the grizzled vet he is, suggests you either take along the son-in-law so that your wife thinks your only going so as to keep an eye on him, or failing that employ an excuse such as the Dealer Appreciation Seminar. Tell she who must be obeyed that you are going toa weekend convention, business meeting, or whatever, just don t mention curling It might also help to mention that Jack Yorgason and Bill Brown are hauling grain to Regina, so she really believes you are not curling. Then when you show up Sunday evening, completely bedraggled you can either offer her the prize you won or continue the charade by claiming you contracted food poisoning Either way your as good as dead, so start buttering her up for next weeks spiel Thanks for those time tested tips George, now we know why your hair is so grey Inclosing it was good to see Butch Long Branch Glimsdale back Jan Daley Photography P.O.
