Accepting the donation for the society was Ted Hames and Don Welbourn. Currently, the society's financial assets amount to 44.941. They have applied for charita- ble society registration, but have been unsuccessful to date. Chatterton - Beauty Culture 22/32) - Westin Hotel, Calgary - Hair Show. GUEST SPEAKERS: March 15 (M. Brown - Social 10) Murray MacKenzie: Crossroads Program: Grasshopper, leafy spurge problems continue A recent forecast predicts another severe grasshopper infestation in the southern part of the M.D. of Willow Creek in 1988, At the March 16 meeting, Richard Berringer, Fieldman for the Agricultural Service Board, asked the M.D. council to keep this in mind when deciding whether to continue its grasshopper assistance program this year. According to the forecast, grasshoppers should not be a problem in the rest of the municipality. 5 Another serious matter Berringer raised is the spread of leafy spurge. In his opinion, irradication of this persistant weed is practically impossible. He said roots are known to go down anywhere from 22 to 28 feet, and patches he had eliminated, several years. though were reappeared sites where ve become M.D. Yet are now over 7 noxious weeds established within the personnel and equipment to deal with the problem are the same as when the number was only 200. He said it appears inevitable that taxes will have to increase to provide the resources necessary to implement effective control. Reeve John Zoeteman suggested the alternative of greater farmer involvement in that he does the work under the Fieldman s supervision. However, Berrringer expressed some concern over that as a solution. At the time control measures should be taken, the farmer is often too busy with other work, he said, and no one can afford the result if the problem is neglected. Turning to another Service Board matter, it will again sponsor a wind erosion essay contest on the same basis as in 1987. Last year participation was excellent with 99 entries from students in grades six, seven and eight throughout the M.D. Prizes to third place are awarded at each grade level.
