Many of us are now facing a very hectic month ahead with harvest and fall-grain seeding uppermost on the job list. To make the fall even more exciting, more and more farmers are incorporating herbicides and fertilizers in the fall, as well. Admittedly, most of this work is done outside of high-priority har- vest time, but still those practices warrant some con- - sideration, 1. Fall Incorporation of Herbicides Across our district there were many poor rapeseed -crops on fields treated with Treflan in the spring. The * deep incorporation with Tre- flan dried out the seedbed causing widespread seedling blight and poor emergence in general. For our erosion-prone area there are few other alternatives except for fall incorporation of granular Tre- flan into fields protected by trash. The disc implements recommended by Elanco should be substituted with The 75th Anniversary Commission is presently seeking individuals who wish to take an active role in co-ordinating the octivities*of Alberta's 75th Anniversary. Fall incroporation not only gives the farmer a chance prepare a decent seedbed the next spring, but it also allows the chemical to gasify and spread out a bit in the soil giving more thorough weed control. Spreading or spraying Avadex late in the fall capitalizes on this effect, as well, not to mention saving time during seeding. 2. Fall Incorporation of Fertilizers According S many scien- tists and industry people fall fertilization will become more and more popular for good reasons. One is that farmers are using more granular urea, 46-0-0, a type of fertilizer that lends - itself well to fall fertilizing in most of our area. Secondly, many farmers are getting sick and tired of poor availability of product, price increases and the general mayhem of getting their fertilizer on during seeding. Thirdly, farmers now have access to air-seeders that can be used to cultivate fertilizer into the ground in a normal summerfallow operation. 3. Fall Incorporation of Herbicide-Coated Fertilizer Herein, brightest prospects. Several farmers in our district tried Avadex or Treflan coated urea this spring and I expect some will try it this fall. Although the rates of fertilizing must be high (over 150 lbs./ac of 46-0-0 or over 70 lbs./ac of actual N ) farmers like the conven- ience of the one-shot applica- tion. Also, the fall incor- poration saves spring work and allows more eyen distri- bution of the herbicide, as mentioned before. prac- tice is so new that very little long term information is available for our area, but it will be very interesting to see if we can duplicate the good results American farmers come used to for over 5 years. - Granum- News By Eleanor Rondeau Visiting over the weekend with Mrs. Agnes Mack was her son, Bob and his family of Lethbridge.
