Alfred Poyntz Patrick's birthday.
L-R: R.B. Bennett; Alfred P. Partick. A. P. Patrick, Dominion Land Surveyor, came from west from Ontario in the 1870's. His father, Alfred Patrick, Companion of the Most Distinguished Order of St, Michael and St. George, was a close friend of Sir John A. MacDonald and was clerk of the House of Commons from 1867 to 1877. Patrick surveyed much of early Calgary, Alberta, and adjoining country between the 49th and 51st parallels of latitude; the Rocky Mountains, Bow River, Fort Macleod, Cypress Hills and Qu'Apelle district. He later did surveys of Calgary. In these pictures, it would appear that Richard B. Bennett was entertaining him on one of his later birthdays. According to Archdeacon Maddocks, who officiated at Patrick's burial service, the old gentleman was 100 and 9 months old at death if he interpreted correctly the inscription in a small bible which the family treasured. Apparently it had been given to him when he was a baby, and it was inscribed 'On the occasion of his first birthday'.
