Building Canada Land and Irrigation ditch near Queenstown, Alberta.
One four-horse and one, eight horse team at work. The outfits are of the Canada Land and Irrigation ditch, which ran through the Blackfoot reserve, turned south by the William Brown Property and Meandering on into Lake McGregor and on to Vauxhall, Alberta. the ditching was done by various contractors with horse outfits and this may have part of the outfit of Fred Mannix Senior who became the head of one of the biggest construction companies in Western Canada. He was the first to venture in construction work and owed over $40 000 when the Canada Land and Irrigation went into liquidation in 1912 and had to be refinanced. At the time this ruined his partners and they thought thier construction days were over. the new general manager David Hayes considered them first class creditors and promised to protect them if at all possible. Within sixty days the parties had been paid off and Fred Mannix Senior continued his construction, increasing his business until it became well known and is now of national importance.
