Harvest wheel, Castor, Alberta.
This wheel was built by Miller Brothers (Art and Mel Miller), Castor blacksmiths. Basic design obtained from USA source. Believed to be the only one made in Canada. Size: 2 feet wide 8 feet in diameter constructed from long one inch boards bent to a cricle and held together with iron braces every 18 inches. The bull of drive wheel of the binder ran inside this large wheel, thus giving traction to the binder wheel when drawn over soft or muddy land and therby permitting farmers to harvest their crops. It was created out of necessity brought about by the exceedingly wet harvest seasons of 1915 and 1916.
