INCREASING yearly and varying in its component parts, the immigration into Canada is of interest, because on it, to. a large extent, depends the future of the country. The full tide of immigration from Europe during the latter half of the nineteenth century was directed to the United States, and the stream entering the Dominion was so small that there was no disposition to analyze it. The Government and the people alike were so anxious to increase the population and put: citizens on the wide, vacant: stretches that the source of the supply was a matter of indifference. The conditions have changed, however, and now the current is setting toward Canada. ONE DOLLAR will in our Sayings Departm open an account our s? and your account will be welcome. ont MEDICINE HAT BRANCH Fourth Avenue : : C. H. McDunnough, Manager SOPPOSE SPOS S The percentage of increase in our imm gration last year was greater than was rever recorded in the history of the United States, not excluding the most prosperous years of that republic. : The returns for the first three months of the current fiscal year, which have just been published, indicate a great increase in the influx from Europe. For the three months, April, May and June, the total was 52,084. This:was an increase of 36 per cent. over th figures for the same period of last year. Into this fact may be read an POP rrredereeareeede Sreteeceeedeeteetecteregeateateety - ImperialBa Capital Paid Up . - Reserve Fund ... A GENERAL BANKING BUSINESS TRANSACTED. These people are all welcome to Canada, as there is work for them to do- Generally speak- ing they ar not so valuable to the country as those from Great Britain or the United . States, but they are needed. z A glance at the figures for the immi- gration from the United States is sufficient 'to-show, why the republic is making an at- tempt to discover the attragtion Canada has to offer, and, if possible, to form some means of retaining the people south of ca border. During April, May and June of last year 43,802 came to the Dominion. For the same months this year the record is 53, 343, or nearly a quarter more. If the same rate-of-increase obtains during the rest of the year, Americans moving to Can- ada should number about 170,000. These settlers are peculiarly adapted to the con- ditions they find here. They bring wealth with them and are a source of strength to the country. By far the greater part of this yearly tide comes to Western Canada. The figures for this year should be particu- larly weleome to the citizens in this part of the Dominion. A slight decrease has taken place in fhe immigration from the British Isles. . For the three months last year the figures were 71,046. This year but 69,969 pame. Can- adians should hope for poner but an in- crease in the number of people who come from the United Kingdom to make their homes here. Anglo-Saxons are the sinews of the Empire. The falling off is food for thought. Tt should not caus uneasiness, however, as the decline is so slight that it will probably be wiped out before the year closes. The causes of even so slight a decrease should be sought by the immigration auth- orities. It has been stated in Great Brit- ain of late that Canadian immigration agents have been in the habit of exaggerat- eriptions of the land. This may have had an influence on the immigration. Canada needs no false painting. The plain facts . P, R. PASSENGER SERVICE ment-or by-a- ing the advantages of Canada in their des- A ction, who injure: good name of the Dominion, is not worthy of his alling and should not be allowed to continue his. work. So THE MESSAGE OF THE CROP THIS SEASON'S period of anxiety has passed; the bulk of the grain is now safe from the ravages of. the whather. From the shadows of uncertainty, Western Canada has gone suddenly into the full sun- shine of reassurance. The hopes cf the most sanguinary have been fulfilled in more ways than one. Press. despatches of the past few days have spread the intelligence that, besides exceeding the crop of Jast year in quantity, the yield of the prairies this season will set a new record for quality. Only a neg- ligible portion of the wheat inspected up to the present has been below the standard ealled for by the contracts and a greater percentage of the crop is being put in the highest grade than has ever been the case before. The splendid results of husbandry on the prairies this year are the first indica- tion that the farmers are: learning a new lesson. The higher quality of the grain is primarily due to two causes care in the selection of seed, and improved methods of cultivation. For many years after the West was first discovered by the farmers the opinion was general that only a crude form of farming was necessary to ensure a heavy-yield. Evidence is at last fortheom- ing that a true conception of the methods called for is being formed It has taken many years of teaching, but the lesson is being tearned. This season s returns have a message for all whose livlihood depends upon the suc- cess of Western Canada. It is a word of than any other which could come. Far from being exhausted, the prairies are merely at-the threshold of their most glorious epoch. Instead of de- ereasing in yield yearly, they will increase on the sure foundation of knowledge. eet ee THE STREET RAILWAY. THE QUESTION as to whether Medicine Hat will grant a street railway fran- chise to a private corporationor whether ity will remain loyal to the principles of municipal ownership, forms the chief topie of conversation around the city just now. The interest taken in the matter is not purely local either, as the other cities in Alberta are already alive to. the fact that Medicine Hat is playing with fire and it will only be a short time before the eyes of all Canada, municipally speaking, will be drawn in this direction. Sy oh FIVE of Alberta s cabinet ministers will present at-the reception to the Duke of Connaught at Medicine Hat next month at the very time the Conservative press has been rumoring ? we were to be in the throes of a provincial. election Lethbridge Herald. SSeneopi 2 rege Sao IT is to be hoped that the citizens are not losing sight of the fact that they will be expected to decorate their residences along the line the procession will take, when the Governor General and his party visit Medicine Hat on October-41th. New Graving Dock Needed at Quebec It Would Further St. Lawrence Trade More than Alds to Navigation (W. A. P, Despatch) Quebeo, Sept. 20. Discussing the question. of a Canadian Lloyds , Messrs. Fry and Company, Lloyds agents at Quebeo, state that the in mediate construction of another grav- ing dock in Quebec suitable for re- pairing the numerous steamers now using the St. Lawrence route which cannot enter-the present docks, would relieve the anxiety experienced by un- derwriters more than the provision of up-to-date aids to navigation and also have a greater tendency to in- duce them to reduce their rates and thereby the trade via the St. Law- rence would be greatly increased.
