When the request of the aequatie association was made it was pointed out that a permanent building for at the opening of the skating season. The Council immediately weighed the pos- sibility of erecting temporary structures which would serve for the coming winter and which could be supplemented with an adequate permanent building for the suc- ceeding season. It is due to this readiness of the Council to shape its plans to the de- mands of the moment that Lethbridge will enjoy free skating durin, the approaching cold months. We are both glad and sorry to learn that Lethbridge is to establish a civic rink; glad beeause the citizens there will have the op- portunity to enjoy the most healthful of Canadian winter amusements at no cost, and sorry beeatise Lethbridge has taken the question into consideration before Medicine Hat has even approached it. Some weeks ago the News pointed out the ease with which the armirable munici- pal improvement could be built and main- tained in this city and urged that the City Council take early action. To our regret, nothing has been done in preparation. But it is not too late yet for a start to be made. As the city lacks both civic associations and sporting bodies which might coliect facts and make representations in the matter, it remains for the Council to take the lead. We are of opinion that the citizens woul heartily support the decision to main- tain several rinks, one below the hill for the use of those in that part of the city, otie.on the hill for the convenience of those nearest to it, and one in the industrial section. pe October 21. 1774 Continental Congress approved the Address to the People of Great 2 Britain, prepared by John Jay. 1797 The famous frigate Constitution launched at Boston. 1805 Horatio Lord Nelson killed at battle : of Trafalgar, 1821 Jenny Lind, the famous singer, born.
