To the Mayor and Council: I herewith hand you the report of this department for the-month of August: Gas Department. The gas well on the Ogilvie property is completed and closed in, in accordance with the re- port handed you earlier in the month. 43 new services wero laid, an addl- tional main was lald and regulator installed to serve Montreal Street School and the two new hotels on the north side of the track. During the month there were 37 meters repaired and two regulators and 18 services have new stop cock boxes placed on them. The cost of the street light maintenance for the month is 155 Public Works Department. The work of the Pubic Works Department has been greatly bam- pered this month owing to the lack of men, so that the progress for the month has not been what was anticl- pated. During the month 3925 lineal feet of curb and gutter was com- pleted, and 1260 square feet of lane crossings. It might be well at this point to point out that it is the in tention of this department to proceed with the construction of street cross- Ings as soon as they can obtain a foreman to take charge of the work. Conerete Walks, During the month 3312 square feet of concrete sidewalk were laid, to- gether with 180 Tinea feet of retain- ing wall on Fifth Avenue, for which the property owners have agreed to pay. Street Grading. Fifth Avenue from Main to Brae- mer Streets has been partially agn- pleted-and will be gravelled as soon as the curb and gutter work is com- pleted on this street. Sixth Avenue, between Montreal and Balmoral Streets, have been rough graded and as soon as the surface sewer is com- pleted, this street will be gravelled. Montreal Street has been completed from South Railway to Fifth Avenue. Street repairs have been made on Toronto Street and the West Road Allowance, and on the Trail leading to the Agricultural Society grounds. This work was undertaken in order to facilitate transportation during ex hibition week. In addition to this, 2000 Iineal fect of spur track has been graded to the Medicine Hat Pot- tery factory. The completion of this spur is delayed through the inability to obtain rails for the work. Every r You For A Smart Cap You'd look well in a cap but you perhaps have never seen the cap that would just suit your face. You will, just as soon as you try on an Eastern Brand cap- the kind that has fit and style the only cap you can buy in all this country that really suits the face of the man who wears it. Really, you need a cap about as often as you need a hat. BUT you need the right cap. You will find it in any store that displays WI Uy, the Eastern Brand i 2S sign. EASTERN effort is being used to get these materials on the ground at as early a date as possible. Domestic Sewers. 3605 feet of 8 inch sewer was lald, and 346 feet of 10 inch; 13 man holes and 36 new connections represent- ing the work of this department for the month, Surface Sewers. Fourteen catchpits have been in- stalled and connected to the surface on Fourth and Fifth Avenues. Wat During the month 1720 feet of new main has been laid. Three hydrants and 45 new services have been in- stalled. During the same month last year, 25 new services were installed. In the maintenance of the depart- ment there were 17 repairs to mains, In almost every case the trouble has been at the joints, and it would ap- pear that the cause of this is due to pumping directly on th gt; mains in order to increase the pressure on the hill. The work in connection with the new Water Worki tem has been extremely heavy during:- the month and the Council is now in possession of the reports covering all the heavy contracts which are to be let in connection with this work, and every effort will be used to push this work to as early completion as pos sible. Parks and Markets Department Riverside and North Parks received general maintenance. The walks it Bennett Park have been outlined, and considerable work done to completion of this work. The third section of the cemetery has deen laid out, the walks gravelled and the appearance of the property greatly improved. Boulevards have been watered and the grass mowed weekly and young trees have bven supported by staking. General at tention has been given to the care of the stock. This stock has made excellent progress during the summer and it Is estimated that there. will be approximately 1800 trees for boule- vard purposes next spring. I would recommend that those streets which it fs the Intention of the Council to have boulevarded duriig the coming year, that the ground be thoroughly Prepared and manured this -fall Electric Department The electric lines have been ex- tended 14,797 feet; 23 new connec- tfons were installed and 7 new trans- formerg hung. The contractors have arrived on the ground to install the heavier rims for the fly wheels, This feature may cause interruption in electric service, but every efofrt will be used to maintain the service as constant as possible. a BRAND CAPS on om a a - a en wo nn a a wn ae a a wn - a wn n an on on an - an od od na n - a a -n - an a a an an an * an nn an an on nn a an -n an a an - ood on an a on an an na nn an * cr INEER.
