BAKER, City Clerk. TuThSa Calgary, Alta, POWERS INTEND TO. KEEP PEACE INTHE BALKANS Bulgarian Government is Doing its Best To Re- press War Fever. ready Battle Lasted all Day Yesterday. Servia Warned to Embark on No Dangerous Enter- prises. Peace Between Italy and Turkey Now Seems Near 18. The Balkan trouble is still unsettled but news is of a more hopeful tendency than for many days past. It is believed in Vienna that the Bulgarian Government is gaining ground against the war agitation: It is believed that Bulgcria s re ported representations to the powers in reference to Macedonia, are a0- tually part of the government's ef- forts to calm the agitation: It is declared both at Vienna and Con- stantinople that the powers must keep the hot heads im check, and even if there should be war, neither will be allowed to accept any territory as the result of victory. AUSTRIA'S WARNING. Austria is expected to have warned Servia separately not to embark on any dangerous enterprise or Aus- tria would take the most severe measures, All repo.ts from Con- stantinople indicate that the govern- ment is not perturbed. It is stated that the Porte has received a definite intimation that the powers intend to preserve peace in the Balkans. It is also learned that the Zbranje at the coming spec- al session will probably support the Bulgarian Government in repressing the war fever. A BATTLE ON FRONTIER. A Saloniki despatch to the Times says that the recent engagement on the frontier developed into a ver- itable battle. The Turkish Karakols offered stout resistance to an attack of 5,000 Bulgarians. The fight con- tinued all day long. The casualties are unknown. Owing to the serious condition the commandments of all the Macedonian divisions have been order d to prepare for mobilization TURKEY S PEACE PROPOSALS. Turkey has made peace proposals which have a chance of being regard- ed favorably by Italy, according to the Constantinople correspondent of the Times. It is believes that Tur- key s proposals provide that Tripoli and Cyrenaica shall remain under the suzerainity of the Sultan who shall be represented by aMoslem ap- Pointed like the khedive and that the entire. military and civil administra- tion of both territories shall be en- trusted to Italy. The Porte is now seeking a formu- a explanatory of the Italian decree of annexation which might prove ac- ceptable to Turkey's subjects and to Ttaly. WOULD WELCOME INTERVEN- TIOG. Kiamil Pasha, president of the council, in an interview as sent by. the Constantinople correspondent of the Daily Mail, said that Turkey would welcome intervention by any fair-minded - power, between herself and Italy to bring about peace. He also- reiterated. assurances of the Porte s determination to carry out reforms in Macedonia. JORDAN IN SHADOW OF DEATH CHAIR Murderer Has Fought Four Years for His Life. IN JEALOUS QUARREL oe HE MURDERED ne London, Sept. Brother-in-Law Has Spent Large Sums on Prisoner's Defenee, Boston, Mass., Sept. 19. Chester 8. Jordan, who killed his wife four years ago this month, has been taken from the jail in Hast Cathbridge to there to: await death in the electric chair fn accordance with the sen- tence of the court. According to this sentence the noted prisoner, whose case bas attracted country-wide at- tention, will be put to death early in the coming week. The best lawyers in Massa- chusetts were retained as counsel and the case was carried to the Supreme Court of the United States. Officials of the Bast Cambridge jail, where Jor aii,bas been confined for four years, declare him to be one of the tiost: remarkable y:isoners with which they have ever met. During. the years of his confinement in jail the prisoner spent his days largely in studying the *iarket reports, in which he displayed the same quiet interest as might broker in bis office. Jordan s crime Was of an unusually gruelsome nature, Of giant build and handsome face, the young man had sought and found employment as an aciur, after leaving his boyhood home in Indianapolis, Early in his stage career he met and married Mrs, Hon- orah Eddy, The married life of the couple proved tempestuous, Mi Jordan, according to her husband, took to drinking- nd associating with other men, This led to Jealous quar- Tels between the two and it was one of these quarrels that ended in the death of the wife. The murder committed in the home of the couple in Somerville, In the beat of a quarrel, according to Jordan s own statements, he struck his wife and the blow caused her death. The husband went out and bought butcher s knkife and a hack saw, with which he dismembered the ody. He severed his wife s hea also the legs. Then he tried to des- troy all trace of them by burning them in the furnace of his home. He put the rest of the body in a trunk, and came to Boston with the ghastly burden, stopping at a boarding house preliminary to taking a steamer for New York. it was his intention to get rid of what remained of his wife by throwing the headless torso into the water while the boat was en route for New York. Uy, to this point all had gone well with the young murderer. But when he arrived at the wharf he found that the New York steamer had gone. He then hired a cabman to drive him back to the boarding house. -His nervousness aroused the suspicions of the cab driver and after the latter had carried the trunk to Jordan s room he mentioned the matter-fo an officer: The police suspected that the trunk might contain stolen goods, as up to this time there was no sus- picion that a mutder had been com- mitted. When the officers entered the room and examined the trunk against Jordan's protests they were dumbfounded by their ghastly dis- covery. When taken to the station the young man calmly told the en- tire.story and an xamination of the apartment in Somervill bore out the horror-of the crime to: which he had confessed. During the trial Jordan listened to HUGH NEILSON, President.
