COMMISSION GOVERNMENT. Now that Medicine Hat has reached the roportions of a real city and. has proble on its hands in keeping with its status as a municipality, it jooves. the citizens to concern themselves as to the best method of shaving its publie affairs. man- aged. Ways that were satisfactory for a town will not do for-a city. The Council idea is all right for small places where every citizen knows more or less about the dmonton has Jost as much as 4000 ina ingle month or to receive the inform tion that. Edmonton has cleared as high as 3800 profits in a month. As a matter. of fact the News has been informed that Ed- monton calculates to lose 20,000 this year on its street railway system. But as against this it must be remem- bered that Edmonton has spent 600,000 in improving and extending the system dur- ing 1912. There is 30,000 in interest right off the reel. Again there. is the cost of twenty-one feet of pavement charged up against the railway on every paved street over which the street car system runs. Then there is the high cost of power to take into aecount. In fact there are many con- siderations whik quality the statement that Edmonton Jose 20,000 on its jstreet railway fis year. One of the most important of considerations is con- tained in the circumstanee that Edmonton after five years operation values its street railway franchise at.two million dollars over and above the cost of installation. That, in itselfis certainly a valuable addi- tion to the city s assets. BRYAN, AND WILSON. But the system of a direct commission has been tried and proved most successful. There are many phases of the work under this system that commend themselves to a eommunity desiring good municipal goy- ernment and the News proposes placing these before the citizens of Medicine Hat from time to time. The News believes that that the direct commission would be the best system for Medicine Hat and pro- poses to giy dit reasons. In doing so it THIS DATE IN HISTORY. .
