To develop a city properly it is im- portant timt the various branches of legitimate sport. should be: encour- aged, and keep apace with the in- dustrial and mercantile development. It is also expected that this organ- iaation will be of great benefit and of aid to the agricultural society. As to ice racing, no winter sport) in the east proves so attractive, for the lovers of the sport it is on a par with hockey. It is ahead .of. the track racing in as much as the heats are run straightaway and on account of there being no curves; nothing, but a straight stretch, good fast time is possible. On account of the lay- out of the river and the banks Hat- ters will. be afforded great -oppor- tunities to witness the local races. Horsemen don t forget the meeting Monday night at o lock. Golf And Country Club ional Board of Directors Named and Instructed Proceed With Incorporation Action of Committee . Endorsed in Purchasing Grounds Everything Will be Ready for a Spring Opening. The Golf and Country Club took formal shape last evening when at an enthusiastic meeting a Provisional Board of Directors was selected as follows: .C. 8. Pingle, W. G. Lynch, W.-A. Burton, John Inwood, A. J.N. tlmerrill, W. P. Dundon, Dr. Agnew and H, W. Ireland. Mr. Dundon took the chair and ex- plained what had been done by the committee appointed to report upon 4 suitable site. The members had looked over quite a number and eventually selected one a mile south and five miles east of the city. A Small payment had been made on the property to secure it and an agree- ment of sale signed. The price of 3000 for 200 acres was sinall con- sidering location and suitability. The jduty of the present meeting was to appoint a-Provisional Board which would arrange to finance the proposi- tion, arrange, for incorporation, place stock on sale and do such work as was necessary to place the grounds in shape for spring use. NO PROPOSAL SO FAR FOR-1913 Bade LEAGUE Better Get Busy and Then League Will Be Ready for Season, S Strange, so far there hasn't been a word as yet this fall here or else- where in the province as to the base- ball prospects for the coming year of 1918, Drie, sonie ofthe Moguls bave been busy, and are already talking baseball league, though they are do- ing it on the quiet. President, Frank Grey of Edmonton Has written to Mr. James Fleming about the matter. It would not be bad idea for the joters of the-teague. were they to get busy early this year. Last: year they were pretty late in starting, and every plan they Submitted was talked about tor a couple of weeks before action was taken. A there may be many more propositions this. year, perhaps they will need a little more time, so they should start early. LEAGUE WITH SENIOR TEAM) If District Proposi ion Goes Through Hat Would Get But Four Games. GITY LEAGUE OF FOUR TEAMS WOULD HELP OUT Ice May Arrive Any Time Should Get Teta Po- gether. It fs near time that the hockey of- ficials appointed at a meetings held, got busy and map-out some plan of campaign. One of these days this Ola Hat is going to wake up and find Mr. Mercury playing tag down below the zero mark, and that means ice, skating, and what better for some, hockey, It might also be well to jar Mr. Cook's memory that he is soon to cail meeting to form that Senior hoc- key district, so as to be able to get the games launched. There is anoth- er point that it would not be out of the way for to get busy and organize that talked-of city league with four teams. There is a possibility, that this senior team might only give a game of so: One thing is certain, it would hardly give any more than four games in the Hat, and surely Hat hockey fans want to see a few more than four games. Hatters showed last year that they appreciated hockey. 'They showed al- so that they would turn out to see the home teams play. They fairly packed the rink at the majority of the games. Let the city league get busy. They can cop a little of the loose change and at the same time have some good sport for themselves and give the fans something to bet their money on. EVERS AS CUB HEAD, PASSES UP OLD MATE Chicago, Dec. 19 Manager Evers, of the Cubs, has plated Sheckard, the veteran outfielder, upon the market. He would trade him for a good pitch- er. DUNDEE BEAT MOR The brothers are twins, to fragments itby? workmen. Dr, Woodward said the skull prow ed to be very differen trom e skull oft any elas of man hithtfto met with. It has the steep forehead, of the modern man with scarcely nny brow ridges and the only external appearance of antiquity was found in the occiput, which showed that in this early form the neck was shaped like that of modern man, but that it was more like that of the ape. The brain capacity, was only about two thinds that of the ordinary mod- Fern man, -The mandible, Dr. Woodwanl add- ed, differed remarkably from that of man. Tt agreed exactly with the mandible of a young. chimpanzee, Still, it bore two molar teeth which were human in shape, If these were removed it would be impossible to decide that the jaw was human at fall. The skull differed so much from those of cave men already found in jGermany, Belgium and France, that that is was.diffioult at first sight to interpret it. The new specimen, said. Dr, Wood- ward, was proved by geological oon- sideraticns to be older than the re- mains of these-tave men. It was in- teresting to note in this connection, that the newly found skull wats close- ly similar in shape to that of a Very young chimpanzee while the skull of the Jater taye men had the brows of a full grown chimpanzee. Therefore the changes which took place in the skull in successive races of early men were exactly similar to the changes which took place in the skull of the ape. It grew from youth to matur- ity. . Dr, Woodward said he was inclin- ed, therefore, to the theory that the cave men were a degenerate offshot. of early men and probably became extinct, while surviving modern man might have arisen directly from .the primitive source of which the Pilt- down: skull: provided the first-discov- ered. evidence. Dr. Woodward, replying to a ques- tion as to the approximate date ot the skull, told a reporter that it be- longed to the lower Pleistocene per- iod,. which could not be. computed in terms of years. A dim conception of its antiquity could be gained from the fact that the gravel in which it jwas imbedded must have been car- ried there by a stream which was mow the Ouse, and which had since cut for itself a channel eighty feeb deep anda mile distant from the spot. In the gravel, too, were relics of the elephant, mastodon, hippo and red deer, besides flint implements anterior to those used by the eave dwellers. STRAWS. Settled Ownership of Farms and Wives Interesting Romance of Two Twins. New York, N. Y., Dev. 20 Gaston and Georges Pootman, two young Belgian farmers, settled in the Can- adian Northwest four years ago, pur- chasing two farms near Regina, Sask. When the farms were bought the question arose which, farm should Gaston haye. To settle it, Gaston took two straws and asked his brother to draw one, Georges dr w the shorter and Gas- ton had his choice. Both farms have yielded good returns The farmers have a sister in Ant This sister had two dear friends, Georgette and Leah Terwag- ne, charming twins. -Miss Pootman showed the girls a photograph of the farmers and then sent the farmers a photo of the girls. Pearce, Aus- tralian minister: of defence, and the commonwealth general staff early next week, in strengthening the hopes for complete maval and military co- operation between the two dominions at tho earliest possible date. The Sydney Morning Herald, while cinphasiaing the advantages of co- operation in defense, says: Tn matters which concern the in- tegrity of the British empire in the ific, our interests are not in- dividual but identical, nevertheless, in order to further our joint destinies there is no necessity for New Zea- Yand to sacrifice any vestige of her individuality.
