Steam Laundry Building Gutted Fire which broke out at an carly hour this morning completely de- stroyed, or at least put out of com- mission, the plant of the Medicine Hat Steam Laundry on Toronto Street. The fire originated In the-rear of the building and the collapse of a portion of the floor . precipitated a goodly share of-the valuable machinery into the basement. At 2.25 the alarm was given which quickly brought the fire engine and brigade to the spot, and within the space of a few second a well directed stream of water Was descending upon the seat of the conflagration. It was, howeyer, too late to prevent the col- lapse of the southeast corner of the math floor which fell almost noisele ly to the basement below. The joists were completely burned through. The machinery, which Is covered by iisurance at about one half of its full value, does not appear, to the casual observer, tobe much damaged, but a closer inspection shows that some little money will be required to put t in working order. The greater portion of the property belonging to Fe Broke Out at 2.30 and Before Plant was Completely Wrecked Much Clothing Lost Rubbish Thought to have-Started It. 7 Extinguished the the public is destroyed. The Laundry Company have already commenced op- erations on their new bullding which will now be pushed ahead with in- creased vigor. The date of comple- tion depends considerably on the weather we get in the next few weeks. Should it be favorable the new laun- dry wij be in full working order by the first week in April. There seems to be a concensus of opinion that the fire originated from sparks from burning. refuse from the garbage heaps to the rear of the ad- joining building. Tt fs understood that all the books . of the laundry have been saved and that will make matters easier for all concerned, The total damage js estimated at about 10,000, this-sum ofcourse-be- ing only an approximation and may be either over or under the real sum. A large quantity of clothing was on the premises at the time of the fire and most of it is either damaged or destroyed. Little or no damage was done to the adjoining properties. 2 : e 3 : fe pons, and next Tuesday night wil recelved the knockout blow.
