It was useless to attempt to save the old buildings in which-the fire originated, as they were of frame construction and as in- flamable as tinder, but never. for a moment were the flames allowed to gain such head- way as would endanger the adj iz stores. It was truly a wonderful exemp- lification- of the control of mind oyer mat- ter and imbued the onlookers: with a feel- ing of great confidence in the ability of the eters a een discharge to the limit the heayy responsibility with which they are enjoined ey foteating the lives and property of the citizens. en TIME IS MONEY. N order to save twenty minutes on. the running time of its fast trains between New York and Buffalo, the Lack- wanna Railroad Company has built a cut off which has cost a round sum of eleven million dollars. Time-saving does not, of gt; represent all of the return on this ECIAL VALUES N CEYLON TEA pound, 4 pounds for one dollar. This work is th latest and most striking example of a policy of-reconstruc- tion, which has been earried through on a most extensive scale by the leading vail- roads of the country, in which hundreds of millions of collars have been expended. The shortening of distance, the saving of time, and, above all, the reduction of grades,, have made possible an annual sav- ing of operating expenses, which repre- serts a fair working interest on the outlay Hopateong-onthe-east to the Delaware Water Gap through the Blue Ridge Moun: tains, is unquestionably the most expen- sive stretch of trunk line railroad in the world. It is carried boldly at a practic- ally level grade, through mountain and valley, and the construction is of an abso- lutely permanent character. Where the engineer encountered pre ig bluffs, he earried his line of grade bs blasting-out deep through cuts, and when wide stret- ches of valley were to be erossed he did not, as in th days of pioneer railroad build- ing, dip into the valley by step descents and climb out of it by equally heavy grades when the hills were again approached. Instead he held his lin at the predeter- were miles in length and over a hundred feet above the floor of the valley. of 150 feet span. hods adopted, the construction of the line illustrates the high : level of efficiency to which modern railroad building has bean carried. The most notable feature was the method of constructing the fills by means of a-,suspended aerial cableway, jabove the centre of the fill. The ex- reign trade is graphically illustrated byten- Belgium * Newfoundland - 1,818 West Indies .. 9,035 for construction. zo ae ele f The new line whieh extends from Lake And you will observe, madam, that the mined level and carried it on solid fills that But this part of the story is best told in figures of length and quantity. Across the Pequest Valley has been built the lar- gest railroad fill in existence 105 feet in height and over three miles in length. In the 22 miles of new line there are 73 bridges and culverts of reinforeed concrete, am- ong which are included .a concrete bridge 1,100 feet in Iength, and the handsome structure that carries the line across the Delaware,.and which has an over-all length of 1,450 feet and includes five arches ea h Not merely in the magnitud and per- manence.of the work, but also in the met- trom which was hung a moveable bridge capable of supporting a train of dump ears cavated material from the cuts was run out above the fill and dumped acurately in place by gt;the train load. Had this great work ben attempted by the methods of con- struction which prevailed in earlier days of railroad building by shovel, scraper and cart the total-cest -would have been more than doubled. ientifie American. s 0: THE COURSE OF CANADA S TRADE, 7 HE trade returns of Canada for the fiseal year, 1911; which ended on March Sist last; reveata larger volume months, but record breaking has become a familiar story in this as in other lt;epart- ments of Canadian activity and develop- ment,, The growth of the country s for- year comparisons. The figures for 1901. and 1911 are: : 1901 1911 Exports -.. .. 196,487,000 297,196,000 Imports... ., 181,237,000 461,951,000 The imports recorded above were for home consumption only. Last year Can- ada exported 45,521,000 worth of wheat; 20,739,000 worth of cheese; 13,854,000 of flour; 8,525,000 of bacon and hams, and South Railway Streets. Any compliment 8,598,000 of live animals... Agricultural the Depart- products, and animals and their products accounted for nearly half the total sales abroad: Our manufactures in some lines are conquering the world s markets. Last year s exports included agricultural im- plements and machinery, 5,500,000; iron and steel products, 3,500,000; leather 2,- 000,000; paper 4,000,000; wood pulp, 5,- 700,000; aluminum, nearly 1,000,000, and automobiles, 892,000. Ps Here is an interesting table (in millons)- showing our exports to various countries and our imports from the same: : .
