In many eas s the electric inotor ean be operated more ch aply than steam loco- motive. For instance, to operate the street cars of Toronto by steam would. be to quad- ituple the expense of operation; On the other hand, to operate a 2ipa scontinental railway system by elec ould be out of the-question. In oth words, where the traffic is dense, and where many trains are, operated, electricity is ch aper than steam. Over lon 5 stretches of unproductive track Rail are not going to run their cars by yi: the process will lose them no matter how vigorously the pub- On the other hand, an up-to-date railway management rolling stock if it could see a distant econ- omy in the process. Tn some eases, of course, it is absolutely necessary - to use electric motors, no matter how costly. For the operation of trains through long tun- nels, and in some of the underground t minals where trains are entering or leaving the stations on different levels, steam can- noe be used, for the steam engine must have a direct outlet to the air for the smokestack exhaust. There.is one great expense connected with the electrically-operated railroad that steam traction is free. from. That is the cost of the great centrat plant and power- house, where the energy for the line is de- veloped, and of course, the running of feed wires the length of the track. It is neces- sary to have these wires, even when the storage system is used, unless the radius of the locomotive is so short that it can take on sufficient power for a round trip at the cen- tral plant: On the other hand, power can be developed much more economically in a central plant for a hundred or a thousand motors than in a hundred or a thousand E er generating plants, and a steam en- gine is, of course; a generating plant on a small scale. At the same time, it is much easier to waste power in an electric motor than on a steam engine, The engine-driver and firemen are held responsible for the 3 would not hesitate to serap half of its DRAYING 364 Toronto Street. How many pounds of fuel they use for every mile travelled can be exactly caleul- ated. In the matter of first cost, the advantage is with the steam locomotive, the outlay be- ing about 25,000, compared with 40,000. It costs twice as much for the upkeep of a steam engine as for that of an electric mot- .05 830 Imp. Other economi re also in favor ol electricity, for the electric engine weighs not much more than half as much as the steam engine of xelatively the same power, jand bridges would be less and there would be less danger of broken rails. The. elect ric lomotive, too, is far more responsive to a sudden or excess demand than the steam tnevmetive: Ty fact. a writer in the New York Sun says that an electric locomotive ie rimhoat like a good horse in the way it will exert itself to meet any unexpected de- nuinds upon it. Experts hold that an electric drive vill grip the rails better than a steam engine, and, of course, it -will-gain headway faster, and can be more speedily brought to a standstill with less wear and tear on the uking machinery. Another advantage at is important where there is congestion of traffic and where track space is at a premium, is that the electrie locomotive is shorter and smaller than the steam locomo- tive. The greatest objection to the electric locomotive, apart from arguments of econ- omy, is that if anything goes wrong at the eentral station the whole system is paral ed until it is fixed, whereas each steam loco- motive, being an independent nit, - can operate without reference to anything that lmixht befall all the other units. The New York Central Railway, which must be reck- oned as the pioneer in the matter of elect- ig its system, has partly overcome this ion to electricity by equipping each objec jelectrie locomotive with a storage battery that will carry it for twenty minutes or half an hour, thus giving ample time for the re- pair of any small accidents to the central plant. As a result it is rarely indeed that the electrically-operated suburban cars of this road are tied up. o- : N O better evidence of the opinion held by outside capital of the future of the fact that an outside contractor is mark- ing his entry into the-city by spending 80,000 in the erection of modern residen- ces. And he s only one of the many who are investing like amounts here. ie Axe now for the Agricultural Society s Fair, the Dry Farming Congress, and cine Hat is sure doing its share of entertain- ing this year. : eG THIS DATE IN- HISTORY 4 July 17. 1674--Sir Isaac Watts, hymn writer, born. famous English Died Noy. 25, 1748. ne oe 1793 Execution of Charlotte Corday, the assassin.of Marat. 1812 Fort Mackinaw, with its garrison of United States troops, captured by a force of British and Indians. 1821 United States obtained ful posses- sion of Florida. 1845 Remains of Daniel Boone and his wife removed from the cemetary at ir Marthasville, Mo., to Frankfort, Ky. 1894 President Cleveland signed the aet admitting Utah to Statehood, 1898 Santiago de Cuba surrendered to the United States forces, 1903 James A.
