COUNCIL AND RE TO THANK CITIZENS TED. WHO At last night's mesting of the Trades and Labor Council the Labor Day Sports Committee submitted the following report: Mr. President and Fellow Delegates: Your Labor Day Sports Commit- tee beg to report that, though thelr labors are not yet quite finished, they- are in a fair way to b completed in a far more satisfactory manner than was at first anticipated. As you are no doubt aware, from a financial point of yiew, things were in an unsatisfactory. state, but for this your committee can in no way be blamed. From the very start of our labors we have encountered setbacks that would discourage the most stout-hearted. In the first place our only reason for holding the sports at the Fair Grounds was on the ver- bal guarantee from the Monorail Company that their line would be running out there on Labor Day. It was only after we had completed ont program that we learned that that promise hadd fallen through. It was then too late to change that pro- gram; we just had to go through with it, Gur next move was to get the citi- zens of other towns Interested . in Medicine Hat sports. With that idea in view your committee visited Leth- lbridge and Calgary, and some idea of their success may be imagined when they were told to go ahead and ar- range for transportation for at least 1,000 persons. Here they met with their second setback, the railway company failing to provide the neces- sary transportation. We then turned our attention to getting the citizens of Medicine Hat to stay in town that day, as the -Cal- gary Stampede was certainly draw- Ing them away. To do this we were obliged to put on attractions that would do credit to a far larger city than Medicine Hat, for we: felt that as this town had grown so big, any- thing that fs put in in the way of at- tractions bas to be put-on right But all this cost monoy, and with all these setbacks, one can readily un- derstand our unsatisfactory. finan- cial state. Now, Mr. President and Gentlemen, your committee wish to tender a most hearty vote of thanks to the City Council for the generous man- ner in which they haye come to our assistance We also wish to tender our hearty thanks to those gentlemen who help- ed us with our sports. Among these we wish to mention-are the judges, Canadian Northern Steamships, Limited.
