THE annuoncement that Sir Max Aitken and Mr. R. B. Bennett have purchased the Toronto Street School property from the the city brings with it fresh indieations-of the place Medicine Hut is to ocecupy in the affairs of Western Canada. The transaction will doubtless atttract less attention than if it had been consummated several years ago when the people were anxiously watch- ing the trend of events to ascertain what the city s future might be. Stories of busi- ness expansions have been made public so frequently of late that the citizens have formed*the habit of lumping the new com- mercial foundations and the extensions and viewing the progress as a whole. rather We have opened an office in Suite IL, in the Im- perial Bank Building. The birth of a new industry means less now than form Growth has altered the people s view-point. ? There is one reflection, however, which must be pointed out. Medicine Hat has now reached the period of its growth wherein it Leet 50-4 1 s fos milestone has been left behind. In developing, a city passes, through several distinct stages of growth. After it has taken form as a hamlet it draws merely upon the country immediately surrounding it and leaves products and capital, within easy reach, to be taken by more important centres at greater distances. As the popu- POOPED HY Sotodtotiocionteaoodtectodtectedge teateeteateetedetoeteeteateeteafeeig lation increases the town receives capital and enterprises from an ever increasing 0604 a radius. When a city has reached that point of development it may safely regard its future with equanimity as its roots are struck so deeply that it may pass through local crises with impunity. Its interests are so wide, its activities so varied that its course is marked by permanency. The sale to Sir Max and Mr. Bennett is the opening of a fresh chapter in Medicine Hat s history. He regarded the future of Medi- cine Hat as apparent. His decision was not hastily mode nor was it the fruit of a muni- cipal advertising campaign. That in this eity which has attracted him may be de- pended upon to appeal to others who are searching for the most adantageous point in the west in which to place outside capi- tal. From now the city may feel certain that in its ability to bring in outside means it is possessed of a new strength- ee RAILWAY BUILDING. TAKING into consideration the vast amount of railway construction work which is being done in the Province this fall, does it not seem a little far fetched for the Opposition to refer in deprecatory terms to Premier Sifton s paper railway poliey ?. Loyalty to our Provinee should be a consid- eration to deter criticism of this nature. The Alberta Government may have its veak spots, but surely neglect of railway development is not one of them. It is true that the work in the southern part of the Province has not as yet been undertaken to any great. extent, but a moment s sane con- Sideration will reveal the cause of this. No there will not be an election this fall, but the oceasion should not be allowed to pass without thanking our Conservative friends for calling atention to the way in which the Liberal members are looking after their constituencies. ee eee MEDICINE HAT landed more than one championship at the Stampede, Mr. Ford Day winning out in the roping con- test for Canadians.
