Warden Bridges today was one which Was found to contain cyanide of po- tassium, It was-mailed from Station N New York City on May 19 at 3 p.m. It contained no clue to the sender, the powder being enciosed In a small envelope marked Headache Powders. Analysis developed that it was poison of the same nature as that which killed, Avis Linnell. Attorney Morse said that he ail- vised Warden Bridges to make public the fact of the receipt of this pow- der. Richeson was entirely innocent of any knowledge of its having been Sent, the attorney declares. He add- ed that he had every reason to be- lieve that the condemned man had no expectation of any such means of death, Boston, May 22.The crime for whoih Clarence Virgil Thompson ZG eg gamed arrest pastor of Immant urch of Cambridge, was sentenced to die in the electric chair, was the confessed murder of his former sweetheart, 19 years old Avis Linnell of Hyannis, a pupil in the New England Conserva- tory of Music in Boston. z The girl stood in the way of the minister's marriage to Miss Violet EAmands, 9 society girl and heiress of Brookline, both through an engage- + ment which still existed between the jBieheson anit Miss Edmants weres preacher attained in his larger sphere mf usefulness made a marked impres- sion cpon him. Surrounded by influen- tial iends and associates his ambi- tions widened. He began to pay court to Miss Violet Edmands of Brookline, the daughter of Moses Grant Edmands, 2 prominent Baptist layman and trustee of the Newton Theological Seminary, from which Richeson had been graduated. Miss Edmands was prominent socially and was wealthy in her own right as well as entitled to share in the estate of Som gt; 880,000 left by her grandfath- er. Entrance to the exclusive home of the Edmands hed been easy to the minister as the pastor of the church the family attended, and in a ehort time he was accepted as sultor for the daughter s hand. At the same time Richeson was meeting Miss Linnell as formerly. But one day he borrowed the diamond ring he had given her, on the pre- text the stone n eded re-setting. He did not return it. The invitations to the wedding of Sent out the afternoon of Saturday, October 14. That same afternoon. Richeson dined with Avis Linnell at a little restaurant at the Back Bay. While there the girl appeared depres- sed. At times tears. rolled down her cheeks. When she returned to her lodging place, however, she appeared cheerful, although quickly excusing herself and hurrying away to her oom. Groans were heard coming from a bathroom of the association quarters shortly. after 7 o'clock that- evening. The door was broken in and Miss Lin- nell was found partially unconscious and apparently in great agony. Half an hour later she died without recov- ering consciousness. A Lelief that the girl had committed suicide was at first general, but her family were disposed to discredit the report, and a thorough investgation was made. Soon aftet the girl died, it was learned that someone had telephoned to Richeson, as the girl's nearest friend, and informed him of the cir- jcumstances. He coldly denied at first. that he knew the girl at all. Then finally, admitting that she had been member of his former parish in Hy- annfs, he suggested that her brother- in-law in Bridgewater be notified.
