Ladies have evidenced their ability to manage covery business, and en- gage In any profession with success, 0. it is not surprising to find one managing a herd of Jerseys; and 8 hort time ago I was privileged b; the kindness of the Hon. Mrs. Cecil Howard, to visit her Jersey farm, at Dutchiahds, Great Missenden, Bucks. Dutohlands stands on the hillside, ererlooking the great gap in the Chiltern Hange, through which. the new Great Central Railway passes, following the course, along whieh George Stevouson wished to lay the London Birmingham Railway, but was prevented by the opposition of the great landowners of hie day. Now, however, the great iron high way is completed, and soon sleepy Great Mlescucen will, letarved by express to the great Saplisis of the north. Tho Lowe at Dutohianda We very pleasantly situ; ated in a finely timbered park, and the surrounding pastures are well gulted for park purposes. The. business is not without its riaks, for we learn that two fine animals had been killed on the railway when travelling to a distant Sbow-yurd, while. a third animal Gwrhich we mw) waa at the same time so feewfully knecked abeut that Is was quite spolled for show-yard purposes, thos entailing a very ser- fous lows; for the prizes and repu- tation won at slows vastly Increase the ee of Se ey We had. ao Opportunity of examining some o the prises that had been won, and Warned from the herd-book that wards had beech made, thus rey - ing. tho personal attention whieh Mra. It was certainly a rather novel siglt to seo her hand- ling the bolls and leading them In- wo line.s Such beautiful creatures they wore, too, with velvety coal and horns like polished ivory. They may haye their bad moments, but they certainly behaved well on this occasion. The milstress of Dutchlands makes friends of all ber animals. She was followed through tho: park by the mare Slavey, jith foal at foot A fine Angora goat also claimed hin share of attention, while the dogs Scamp, Bricks and Flip are her constant companions, and have the run of the house The other animals represented bere are from the herds of the Countess of Lonsdale, Miss Lucy Standish, and Lord Braybrooke. Miss Standist: is one. of the most suc- cessful breedera in England, and her splendid herd at Brockenhurst, in the New Forest, Is famous. Hers was the record anise of last year thirty- elght cows and hoifers averaging over 26 per head, and tkko bulls an aver- age of 27 16s. 0a. each, the highest average made at any sale of Jerseys Garing the year 1897, Lady Lonsdale wor second prize in the bull class 1 Agrivaitural Soolate'e at Birmingham In June with rh NOTES BY J. T- NEWMAN, GREAT BERKHAMSTEAD. Audiey End, Basox, is the oldest in : istonce in England, having been found- odin tho, 1811, The ae this Breed weed to be called, has been Known te Engilah stock-keepers for a conturgeat least. An authority named Culley. who wrote about a hundred years ago, refera to Jersey cattle as being too delicate to thrive in this country after th milder temperature of the Channel Islands, His opinion, however, did not prevent wealthy people from. importing the dainty creatures, and in 1812 Quayle, in his neral View of the Agriculture. refrains from desoriblug the character istics of the Jersey, pleading that of tee Jersey as a r of butter was soon realized: but It was rot until 1844 that the Royal Agricul: tural Society of England officially ve- nized the existence of the breed. Tn that year the Soolety heli ite an- fual show at Southampto: and, partly + fact that that town was the gate througit which Jersey cattle entered Engiand, they advertized a Jersey class with four prizes. Three of these prizes were won by spite sent over from the Channel islands to compete, and the fourth went to an figh-bred ani- mal. This comparative fallure of the mele ni An Aged Jersey. Engiish-reared beast may have been due to the circumstance that Jerseys bred-in this-country lose, in some de- gree, the pecullar deer-like character which distinguishes the breed. They gain. in other respects, it Is true, be- coming hardier, and give even more milk; but fanciers, in-whose eyes type ls above all things desirable, correct the tendency to deviate therefrom by importations of fresh blood from the Channel Islands, The purity of the breed In Jersey is assured by a law which forbids the Importation of ilv- ing cattle into the Isiand. Si..ce the year 1867, when the late Mr. Philip . Dauncey, of Horwood, Bucks, had-a sale of Jersey stock at whickgenaational prices were real- aga, thie breed has enjored re footing, n t only in Eng- land and Ireland (Sootiand is too cold for the Jersey), but In America and many continental countries. The prices given for choice animals have naturally risen with the Incrensing demand. Last year 80 guineas paid for-Mr. Tudway' s cow Alle who won the gold medal at the Dairy Show butter trial said that as much as 150 guineas, was recently refused for a bull. The scale of points to be consid- ered in Judging a Jersey, omits men- tion of the color that the animal ought to be, This omission, is, no doubt, due to the singular sen ibil- ese changes are jess marked in the island, where the cll- mate is more cquable than in Eng- jand, So striking Is this change The Hon. Mra. Cecil Howard and Her Bull, Harlec that Mr. William Housman, ini his cellent little Live Stock F indboo on: cattle says: A cow correctly described as fawn might appear, after the Inpse of a very fow weeks, as gros, or vice versa. Mr. Le Cornu, writing of the breed nearly forty years ago, sald that brindied conta e-not all iiked in the is- land, and brindled cattle might be had very cheaply. A rick fawn col- or Is probably the color that is most sought after It is curious that the two breeds of cattle peculiar to two Islands so near together as Jersey and Guern- sey should be so dissimilar. A cow from 800 Ibs, to 900 Ibs; and a of the latter Is as big a -a Short- horn, welghing, it may be, 1,200 Ibs., or even more, It has been suggest: ed that the Guernsey practice of using oxen for draught purposes has had a tendency to increase the size of the breed distinguished as Guern- reys; but career of laborious util ity will not account-for the Guern- seys less varied coloration, nor for the Jack of sensibility to cllmat which Is so typlcally characterist ofthe Jersey's charming cont, Sertain it is that no breed of tle looks so pretty as the Jers The expert may go into raptures over the glossy jet black hide of the polled Aberdeenshire, with its level ack and square Ilnes. The Her ford has a host of devotees, includ ing the Duke of York. The Ayr- shire makes a capital milker; and the Highland cattle, with their-in- describable shagginess, are exceed ingly pleturesque. But the-gentle Jersey in the ideal pliymate of the ideal dairymaid. Its rich fawn co lorie unmatchable, and the beauti. this country. They remind one of a gazolle or of a deer of some kind or another. Thus it ts little wonder that the Jersey ls popular, expe: claily with Iadles. The Argosy. AN BNGINEER S . STORY, Suffered the Pangs of Raeumatism for Years, Was Reduced in Weigt From 180 to Pounde His Friends Feared That Re covery was Imposaible Now Actively Attending to His Duties. : From the MijIand Free Press.) Alexander McKensi is one of the: well known Teskdenta of Brooklolu, Out., where be has lived for many years. A fow years ago it wes thought that an early graye woul be his; on the contrary, however. be is now stont and strong, and the story Of his Tecovery Is on the lips of al- most all the citizens of that burgh. The writer, while visiting in the elk lage, could not fall to hear of bis re- covery, and wl je Feporters DFS verblal nose for news, decided to pat to the proof the gossip of the village: The reporter visited Mr. MeKensle home ari was Introduced to Mrs. Me- Keusle, Emquiry elicttes the informa; home, but when luforned us to lle mission, the lady freely consented t tell the reporter of ber husband's case. Her story runs ke this: Mr, Began to feel twinges tism In different parts of his body and limbs. Fora time he did not think much of if, but it gradually got worse until th pain was such that he was unable to work, and coukl not get rest at nights. wow haye to get up two or three times ofa night, try and relieve this intense suffering. Of course le consulted a* physician, who pronounced his trouble sclatle Theumatism. The doctor did what be. Could for him, but without giving any Permanent relief. This went On for boreral-years, sometimes he woalt be some better and try to work, then the trouble would come on again and be as bad. as ever. He was pulled down from being a stout man of 180 pounds to about 430, and was so thin and miserable that all who knew him thought It would be only a . matter of a short time until he would be in hls grave. For four years did he thus drag along a miserable existence, until in the be- iluning of 1897 some one recommend- ed Dr, Williams Pink Pills. Tired of medicing, with some reluctance, he procured a box and gave them a trial. Almost at once a change was, per ceptible, and as he kept on taking them. the improvement continued, and he was soon able to be about. By the time he had taken about a dozen boxes he was free from the slightest twinge of rheumatism, and as stout and strong as he had been before his taffitction, So great is his faith in Dr. Williams Pink Pills that when he left home recenti 'to go up the lake for the summer, he took three boxes with him as a preventive against a recurrence of the trouble. Mies. McKenzle was quite willing that this story sliould be made public, and believes that she owes hor husband's life to Drs pink Pile for Pale People.
