Of Indian Head Farm Gives Valuable. Advice American Elm Most Satisfactory for Street Purposes Native Birch Wor- thy of Extensive Cultivation Mr, MacKay opened by saying that tree growing was considered one: of the most pressing experiments on the Experimental Farm, when started 1888 at Indian Head. The Farm at that time and up to 1905 served the: ten territories of Assiniboial Saskat- chowan and Alberta, and as the greater part of the setiled portion of this vast territory was a trocloas: plain, every effort was made to. find suitable hardy varieties that would: varieties were obtained and planted tn. 1889 and 1890. A large portion of these were dead in 1900. Those har- dy enough to stand and still living were Scotch Pine, White and Norway Skruce, Cedar, American Elm, White Birch, White Ash, Native Maple, Ash Fim, Poplar and Birch. Since then Russian Poplars, American Cotton- wood, Willows, Mountain Ash, Larch Balsam Poplar and Oaks have been added. In the spring of 1803 tree distribu: tion commenced from the experimen- tal farm, and each year since, from 75,000 to 100,000 trees have been. sent out free to settlers. Last spring the distribution to Alberta was discontinued on account of that province having two experimental farms from which trees may be pro- cured, as well as from the Forestry Farm situated at Indian Head. On account of being able to obtain large quantities of Maple and ash seed in tho early, years, and. finding these varities very suitmble for wind- breaks and plantations, they were used almost entirely for distribution, as well as for planting on the farme and today they constitute the great bulk of trees sent out chiefly from the ease with which they can be propa- gated and the small loum in trans. planting. The Native Maple is q very unsat- prop nsity all parts of the stant cause of singly; though when used for hedge purposes the suckering Is an advan: tage. The Ash may be considered one of the best trees yet obtained for the prairies, its only fault being its late ness in leafing ouy im the spring, and earliness in losing them in the fall. Native or American. Nearly every train is crowded aiid that there are not more storms. Dakota Cottonwood hes so far proved a good ue or shade tree onthe Experimental Farm. This Variety is eanly propagated from first class. cars provided in a question cuttings, and, except the Russian which makes itself noticeable each BIRTHS eens POLLARD.
