The older First Nations people have put up their colourful tipis in a little village while a larger number of the young men and occasionally a young girl, enter into the Stampede competitions. One event was entirely for the First Nations people and that was the horse race. First Nations people were inveterate racing addicts and there was always keen competition between the different bands and tribes. Their best horses were brought to the fair and competed each night for prizes. First Nations people usually ran matched races over a straight course of about half to a third of a mile. In Calgary, however, they had to make a circuit of a half mile track. The regulations required the riders to ride without any saddle which was their original custom and in some races they were required to ride stripped to the waist and wearing only chaps and moccasins. This race has got off to a bad star from all appearances. The riders never stopped driving and beating his horse until he has crossed the finish line. In a large race they would be strung out for some considerable distance but there would likely be a tight race between the first two animals. The number 256 on a rider's back has nothing whatever to do with the race. This number would be what he held in a Stampede competition bucking, calf roping or steer riding and he is so proud of it that he leaves it on and no doubt he sleeps with it on!
