London, Noy. 28. A reduction. of cable rates acros the Atlantic, This in a sentence is the programme of, the Empire Press Union for the com- ing year. India has been reduced from 1s. to 9d., South Africa 1s. 1 9d.; Australia from 1s. to 9d., and the Straits Settlements from-te-4d. to d. The Union wants the five pence a word across the Atlantic reduced by at least fifty per cent. 4 The-State owned cable from Mon- treal to Australia cost 4d. a word to cable a distance of 10,000 miles; ac- ross the Atlantic where the cables are in the hands of a Ring it costs 5d. a word to cable a thousand miles. If the Atlantic Cable Ring having this month established a complete mono- poly, proves unyielding a state own- ed cable is possible and profitable. Reduced cable rates is the most pressing need of the imperial system. It concerns all. It means direct sup- plies between atl parts of, the world. It means the consideration of them. Too much labor is expended for the closer unity of the Overseas Domin- fons with the Mother Country at pre- sent. It can never be fully achieved until a free and full direct news sup- ply at reasonable rates exempt from allen control is abolished. Galt, Ont., Nov. 29. In this great western capntry there an Ideal residential land and a place where a man may work and the same time be free from. the continual ceasingly gors-on in the big cities. Kot only has this country possession of the inest natural resources of any land in the world but it has beau- spots scattered over the country the Ike of found in any other clime. Some of the seven great, wonders of the world are to be found in this great dom- Infon and probably Niagara Falls and the marvellous Rocky: Mountains will ever remain as the most terrific of the beauties of the country. The west is not so plentifully sprinkled with sce- nery as Is the-cast, but nevertheless the plainer type of scenery which is found in the prairie, provinces is. amply made up for in the wonderful natural scenery of British Columbia. The provinces of Manitoba and Sask- atchewan, with the exception of a few remote spots is undoubtedly barren of any great beauty but the same thing could hardly be said about Al- berta and particularly Southern Al- berta where right through the year almost ideal climate obtains. At the present time we are nearing Christ- mast and in spite of the fact that all the Joys of winter sports are begin- ning and the snow is thick on the ground the sun is shining out in full intensity and the world seems grand. Where else in Canada is their as fine a climate as there is to be found in Southern Alberta? The weather of the North American continent is re- cognized as being better than that which obtains in most European countries and the ordinary medicore weather of Canada would be looked upon as ideal to the European nations, In spite of that, however, there 1s the ugual amount of grumbling at this time of the year over the weather and there are few cities. but have their Uttle-pet complaints about the incon- sistent behaviour of the weather at a time-when- sunshine and comfortable atmosphere is 50 needed. Medicine Hat has guring the past month been under M7 spell of cold weather and many Hatters allege that no such cold snap has been known for many years, but in spite of that it would be dimcult to find any draw- back to the Weather as we have been experiencing. Visitors from outside points are inclined to ask as to what sort of weather Medicine Hat has been enjoying and are rather surprised when they are informed that nothing out of the usual has transpired. The fact of the matter is that the climate of Southern Alberta, though it may seem to be rather untnviting to the outsider, is not necessarily regulated by the position of the mercury in the glass. The European would be rather sca- red to know that in Canada below zero weather is experienced for some mon- ths and his dea of that time of the year is dependent upon his feelings during a similar state in the ther- mometer in his own country. The same thing prevails in the East. The dea of a thermometer that registers thirty and forty below zero Is Te garded with something of horror but when the ensterner comes out to the west he finds that the glass does not necessarily. register the amount of discomfort experienced by the west- erner. Winnipeg has the name for being cold city in the winter, but it Is ap- parent that in Winnipeg there ie no means the amount of cold registered ro im 8 as thefe is ae continual b: Dlowing over Mant- toda praire both summer and winter, and though thie makes the heat of the summer months more endurable makes Winnipeg anything but a de- are many things which go. to make up sights of the mighty turmoil that un-/ i : H which could hardly be Rance ct come tatteenrpeereelea Miarerieienceeeieis Gain ae mene nae kan Ee eee sere eee msec Societal aa lfecae enteay ccstasealiotetae Serie testa seeeaataan the result of the first working exceed- Ieee pcet ant pelantcriees who witnessed its Initial rum. When Medicine Hat has a number of industries in this city which send their smoke round the town and where residential resort will only be foufid on the outskirts of the city, then Hatters may call to mind the days when t was possible to go any- where over the' lty and see unadult- erated country from any point on which the eye alighted.
