Some of the statistics given make interesting reading when call the mass of figures presented. The average population of the pen- tentiaries was 1834, just ten more than the previous year. During the year 334 prisoners were let out on parole and 15 were pardoned. Mon treat City provided more crooks than any other, having a total of 389, Van. couver second with 130, Winnipes 3rd yen 14. The total cost of conitueting, the penitentlaries was 525,647.68, but the revenue derived was 52,017.63, leav- ing the net expenditure 473,630.0: Alberta's penitentiaries share of this was, gross expenditure 62,098.9: revenue, 902.11, net expenditure 61, 196,81. In dealing with Juvenile delingnents the report says: We regret to state that the practice of committing juveniles to the penl. tentiaries is still too common en per cent of the entire prison populs- tion is composed of lads under twen- ty years of age, At St. Vincent de Paul penitentiary the juveniles con- stitute fifteen per cent. This lamen- table condition is partially due to the Yerictions placed upon the judiciary by the provisions of the penal code, members of the judiciary do not real- ze the unsuitability of the penften- tary for pervons of immature age. No doubt, the Incentive is to give the de- Mmquents a chance to learn a useful) trade; but the trade shops of the pen- itentiaries are restricted, and but a small number of apprentices canbe employed. Even those who cag be 50 employed are in necessary contact, timental demonstration or ado about tlon increased from 149 to 199, and during the year 45, all males, released on parole, or a total of SS from the Inception of the act up to March 31, 1911.
