The WCCHS Sports Society took over running the tournament this year with six men s teams and three women s teams taking. part. January 10 Members of the Claresholm Skating Club are busy with preparations to host the Southern Alberta Open Skating Competition. There will be 240. skaters: from all over southern Alberta, including 25 skaters from the lpcal club participating in the event. January 17 The WCCHS senior bas- ketball- team. earned third place in its annual invita- tional tournament. Picture Butte. was the tournament champion with a 62-61 win over Bowness. January 31 The West Meadow girls sports basketball team hosted an invitational tournament. Six teams attended Claresholm. earned fourth place, after losing. 33-22 in the consolation game. February 7 The Novice C Lightning finished as the runner-up at their home tourney on the weekend. The Lightning played two very good games against their rivals, the Stavely Avalanche, los- ing the first one, but com- ing back in the semi-final to-win 3-2. February 14 Claresholm played host to the Southwest Conference JVgand Senior All-Star games this year. In the JV match the east beat the west 105-58 while in the senior match east beat west 77-58. February 21 The Claresholm Lightning girls hockey team held. a successful tournament in Claresholm. However, they. still walked off with the B side win for the second year running. March 21 The Granum Grizzlies Senior Boys Basketball team were. undefeated in league play. They also cap- tured the East Athletic Association Senior Boy s Championship at the Granum gym, winning all their games. The. Girls basketball team, the Wildcats, also were undefeated. in post season basketball tourna- ment in Claresholm. This - was the first girls basket- ball team in many years. March 28 The Claresholm Atom A and C teams won league banners. On March 18 the Claresholm Atom -C team Claresholm marked its 75th anniversary with a centre spread in the newspaper. It also was an exception- al year for the Atom A team winning both. the league trophy and the playoff ban- ner, as they went through regular league play and playoffs undefeated. April 4 Claresholm teen Chase Simpson competed in the 2000/2001 Rocky Mountain Regional Roping Finals at the Claresholm Agriplex March 18. He was the high money winner for the year in the Number. 5 roping, winning the cham- pionship saddle and 1,240, ; The Grade 9 student teamed up with Don Depaoli, of .Longview, to win the Number 7 roping. Simpson earned a. buckle tor his hard work. April 18 The Claresholm Minor Hockey Association wound down the season with a potluck dinner and awards night April 10. Retiring Town employee Don. Rod Fedyk, of the Peewee C team, was named Coach of the Year while Kevin Davis, of the Peewee A team, earned Trainer of the Year. April 25 A Claresholm senior s carpet . bowling team brought home bronze medals after the Alberta Seniors Games zone play- Offs.in Lethbridge. The team skip, Peter Schapensky; third, Shirley Pedersen; second, Al Lambert; and lead, Theresa Lambert took third place honours out of 14 teams in their. division. May 9 Willow Creek Composite gold medal win ners at badminton Zones included Chris Wong, Tiffany Dautremont, Landon Vegter, Shlane Petek and Blair Larson. Winning silver: at. zones were Randy Malachowski and Rose Macgillivray and Jinel Berns carned a gold medal, The badminton team also earned the south zone banner for the school having the most placements in zones competition May 16 A young Claresholm fig ure skater took top honours for her age group, winning the CanSkater of the Year award for Alberta, North West Territories and Nunavut Seven-year-old Johanna Wenlock has been rising through the skating ranks this year. She took: the CanSkater award for Claresholm and the south- ern Alberta region. before going on to win at the inter- provincial: level in early May. May 30 3 Claresholm s Tony Burton. spent eight hours and 45 minutes in his glid- er, traveling 758 kilome- tres on May 23 to set a Canadian gliding record. Burton was flying in Invermere at a week-long mountain soaring camp. He carded the Canadian record for. three turnpoint distance (the total distance around three different loca- tions) beating the former record of 636 kilometres.
