16 Claresholm Local Press Wednesday, June 28, 1995 Sports 19 players to attend Southern Alberta Summer Games By Chris Miller When Joanna Sutter was recruiting players to form the Claresholm Southern Alberta Summer Games soccer team, she was looking for one thing heart. We looked at all the players on all. four (Claresholm Soccer League) teams. We had a couple of people try out, but mainly we were watching for those who put out during practice and games, she said. What she and assistant coach Rosemary Carter have ended up with is a team of 18 boys and girls aged 10 to 12 who give their all during twice-weekly practices. It was very hard, especially - when there are 60-some kids to pick from, Sutter said of select- ing the team. The 18 players have been working on improving. skills, endurance and team cooperation. Despite playing against each other during league play, team members are having no problem learning to work with each other on the sum- mer games team, she said. When they play with each other, it s like your family. for. the summer games. The games, which run July 5 to 8 in Cardston, are all the players seem to be thinking about these days, Sutter said. Some of these guys are talking about nothing but the summer games. One guy asked if we could have soccer every night. Sutter, who has a history in the sport dating back to her school days in Manitoba, admits she and Carter are looking forward to the games as well. I think we re just as excited as the kids. While the players want to win when they get to the games, Sutter said her priority is to see them have a good time and play to the best of their ability. She added - Soccer team ready for games Photo by Che Walker Watt, 11, plays net for the Claresholm team. playing against different teams from those they have faced in league play will be a good experi- ence. It won t be that bad. I won't be that upset. No matter how they place, however, Sutter is certain the players will do their best. They're a good group.
