Loeal Press Classifieds MAKE you money area policy approved BY LORRAINE HJALTE Local Press Contributor A policy which defines attendance areas in the Livingstone Range School Division was approved with some amendments at the June 2 board of trustees mecting. The policy originally contained guideline . six which stated bus service would not be provided for students in a regular pro- gram to travel to their desig- nated school, then transfer to a second bus or another vehicle, which then travels to another school. Parents in the Stavely area who send their children on a bus to the school then transfer into a car pool protested, the proposed change at the May 11 meet- ing. After discussion at the May 11 and June 2 meeting the board of trustees approved. the attendance policy without guideline six. Between the two mect- ings the board examined provincial changes to the transportation budget. The. transportation task force sent out information on how the division gets its grant moncy, explained Ken Lorenz, stant super- intendent of LRSD. One of the changes had to do with boards getting money based on the dis- tance from students homes to their designated school. That was an automatic thing whether the students rode the bus or not, Lorenz said. Draft six was a little more. restrictive in that if students didn t attend: their attendance area. schools, Culprits vandalized a vacant house at 5084 51st Street in Stavely over the weekend. The vandals entered the house illegally and did considerable dam- age once inside. Anyone who saw any suspicious activity around this house over the past week is asked to contact Const. Dan Paterson of the Claresholm RCMP or Crime Stoppers. parents had to make arrangements for their trans- portation from home to the school of their Choice. Lorenz said the policy didn t fit with the new grant structure, If the board received money for the student to go from home to their designat- ed school, the board would be receiving money for something they weren't pro- viding. That was a contra- diction and it had. quite an impact on the board, said Lorenz. When we drafted the policy and made modifica- tions we did it in good faith, but this didn t scem to fol- low a logical way of think- ing, he said. While providing trans- portation from the: designat- ed school to the: school of choice the board has made it clear to parents what their responsibilities are. If they use carpooling the board is not liable for anything that. happens dur- ing the private carpool. It is really important parents understand that, This was checked out with our legal department, Lorenz said. He added the change in the policy reflects the right of parents to choose where their students go to school. The school act allows parents the right to choose where their kids go to school. The board does respect that, said Lorenz. Parents know. what. is best for their children and there are certain restrictions that sometimes come into play: The board is here for the kids, the schools are here for the kids and we have to work the best we canto make that happen.
