Sixty years ago June 19, 1936 W.C. Miller has completed. his rounds in taking the census, but is holding his books open for a week in case anyone has been over- looked. It is likely Claresholm will show a decline in population, for at the moment there are twelve vacant houses in town. Fifty years ago June 20, 1946 The regular meeting of the Macleod Divisional School Board, postponed from June 10th was held in Granum on Wednesday, June 12. In reply to a letter from Dr. Sommerville re: vitamin capsules, it was decided that the practice of supplying these capsules be discontinued for the present, and until such time as they are requested by the parents. Some members of the board were of the opinion that these capsules were being wasted by many Vancouver Manning's BY GEORGE MEYER Reform Party of Canada Leader Preston Manning desired per- haps needed three things from Assembly 96 in Vancouver before he dared to launch his party s campaign for the next federal election, which could be called as early as this fall, but is more like- ly to take place in the spring or fall of 1997 ...or as late as 98. Probably his most pressing requirement was endorsement of his leadership. This came Sunday, the final day of the four-day Reform Assembly 96, held in the Vancouver Tourist and Convention Centre, when del- egates rallied behind him and gave him a whopping 86 per cent approval rating. High as this was, it was down from the 92 per cent majority he received at Assembly 94 in Winnipeg. Manning had gone through some rough times in the two months prior to the conven- Flashbacks pupils, being deliberately spit out or thrown down the sink. Forty years ago June 21, 1956 Much has been heard about million-dollar rains but the downpour of about two and one half inches which occurred last week appears to have been in that category. It was really needed after weeks of drying winds. Then it came down gently and soaked into the ground. The rain began late Thursday night and continued until Saturday. Thirty years ago June 16, 1966 Claresholm Golf Club will have the pleasure of hosting one of Canada s top professional golfers, Frank Fowler, on the local course at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 21. Fowler, golf professional at the Calgary Canyon Meadows Golf and Country Club will put on a display of driving the differ- ent iron shots of playing golf. Twenty years ago June 17, 1976 When 252 Claresholm and area residents donated blood at the Rotary Club's blood donor clinic last week, they set a new record of numbers. The previous high was set last year when 243 donors were on hand. Ten years ago June 18, 1986 After five months of disruption and uncertainty, the storm that has been hanging over the Del Vee Ranch is finally over. After four days of intensive hearings in Calgary, the Psychologists Association of Alberta ruled that allegations that some aspects of the DelVee Ranch program and operator Lori Williams conduct had been inappropriate, had no basis in fact and that Williams and DelVee were Not Guilty. assembly endorses leadership of Reform tion, having to discipline three outspoken Reform MPs who had not only brought some embarrass- ment to the party, but also, in the after-shock period, there appeared some discontent within the ranks. There were rumblings from some B.C. delegates, in the first couple of days of the gathering, of challenges to Manning s leader- ship. Another thing Manning and his advisers sought from the conven- tion was clear cut decisions, through three days of haggling over, and voting on, 48 resolu- tions, plus four proposed amend- ments to the constitution from the Saskatoon gathering four years earlier. The results of the voting on the resolutions are to guide the pow- Continued on Page 9 Will be meeting with Pincher Creek-Macleod constituents by appointment in The Provincial Building in: Claresholm June 24, 1996 From 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Please call Pam at 553-2400 (use the RITE line) or 1-800-565-0962 for an appointment. 100 MPH WIND WARRANTY * Journeyman 3rd year apprentice on every job Insured Job Site * Over 80 year s experience f 320-ROOF (7633) In the early part of A bly 96, the leader was called upon to answer for the action he had taken in disciplining members in recent weeks.
