Sports is ee By Chris Miller Fifty-six young hockey play- ers descended on the Claresholm Arena for a workshop Saturday, but they weren't the only ones being coached. The players parents were also there to learn. Ron Gilbert, who helped orga- nize the Fair Play Jamboree, said the purpose of the day-long event was to teach parents the importance of fun and fair play in minor hockey. Hockey Canada found play- ers were leaving at an early age, he explained. When they reached the age of 13 or 14, reg- istration dropped off. Registrations dropped, Gilbert said, because parents were demanding more and more from their young players. With this kind of pressure, the game just wasn t fun any more. So while members of the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns hockey team were teaching six to 10-year-olds stretches, stick handling and skating, parents were upstairs, studying coaching, officiating Parents take in fair play hockey session Saturday Novice players get some tips from U of L Pronghorn hockey players Saturday. and administration. U of L Pronghoras coach Ron Kraft taught the coaching session to parents. He said with many parents coaching minor hockey, it s important not only to teach the young players the skills of the game, but to be a role model, as well, He also focused on helping parents work with minor hockey coaches, You want them to become aware of the issues they face, he said. Gary Mills, who taught the administrative session, said par- ents wanted to know about the flow of players for example, who could play for what team. The session was also meant to improve communication between people in Minor Hockey and other hockey associ- ations in the province. It gives them an insight into how important hockey is, or any other team sport for that matter, in the development of an individ- ual s philosophy of working with people and the friendships that are developed, he said. Photo by Chris Miller Gilbert said the program is specifically aimed at novice- level players to get them used to fair play ideas at an early age, and to carry that message with them as they grow older. While this ethic can be chal- lenged by large crowds cheering NHL brawls, Gilbert said young players have to accept that what they see on TV and what they do on the ice are two different things. We have to make them real- ize that minor hockey is played for exercise, sport and fun. Professional hockey is played . . . for money. The atmosphere is entirely different. We as parents should realize we're coaching kids to play hockey, not to be NHL super- stars. If the young players learn to enjoy the game of hockey, they'll stick with it for years to come. We should be teaching these kids so they'll play for fun for the rest of their lives. The Fair Play Jamboree, put on by Hockey Alberta, was held in Stavely in 1994. Cobras head coach Dennis Simpson said Monday his team topped Crowsnest Pass, Pincher Creek and Fernie, B.C. teams with out too much difficulty. We had a 20 point lead in each of the games at the half, he said. Cobra Dave Mulholland was named a tournament all-star, while teammate Ryan Mitchell was named MVP. Brooks tournament Simpson said the tournament was a good opportunity for him to rotate players. It s really good for the players, coming off the bench. They re get- ting some valuable development time, he said. But it s not so good for the seniors because they're not being pushed to-improve. However, the seniors will have to work hard during this weckend s tournament in Brooks, Simpson said, as they will be facing teams from Calgary, Saskatchewan and a strong Cranbrook, B.C. team. We had one of our best games against them last year. We lost in double over time. The Cobras also won a resound- ing 89-30 win over Nobleford Dec. 6. Mulholland and Scott Anderson each netted 16 points, while Aaron Austin had 15. While Christmas holidays are just. around the corner and final exams not far off, Simpson said his players haven't let any of this dis- tract them on the court, nor do they let basketball get in the way of their studies, he said. They seem pretty focused to me, he said.
