By ISRAEL KLEIN One of the most important duties connected with good autoriobile driv ing 1s that of reading the instruments on the dash, These insttuments are there for an express purpose, yet few drivers cast an eye upon them for the information that they can obtain from them, The reagon js that few know or ments before them, Even the speedometer, which 1s best known of all, 1s sometimes misread of speed alone. When the speed- ometer shows the driver stepping on st and registers around 60 or 70 miles an hour, the usual driver will boast about the mileage shown on the dial as though he had actually made it But this, in practically every case, ia not so. The speedometer happens to be the most unreliable instrument on the dash, It is calibrated, or set, on the average automobile to register accurately when the car is going around 30 or 35 miles an hour, At this speed it may. be belleved. But the speedometer is so made that 4t cannot go up or down in exactly the same proportion as the actual speed of the car rises or falls. There- fore, when the-dial reads 60 miles an hour, the car may actually be going only about 56 or. 57. When it reads 70, the car speed may be only 65. and 80' on: Below 30 or 35, the actual speed is slightly higher than that ywn on the dial. The speedometer, also, should be watched carefully ' for mileages at which the oll should be changed. Many drivers gauge this duty by timo rather than mileage: Mileage. how- ever, 4s the proper rule to follow, At every 1000 miles or so, the oll shoud be checked for proper viscosity and should be changed if it is too thin. At the same mileage, the car should be greased thoroug At the 10,000-mile points, the oil filter, gas filter and air cleaner might need cleaning or replacing. They should be checked by a. competent mechanic. Then again, at every 1 000 miles, the spark plugs migiit ready for replacement, the valves round and the cylinders scraped of rarbon.
