It should be recalled that he inherited a mess; witness the fact that, at the time of his appointment, the Pension Com- mission was the subject of an ongo- ing Committee of Enquiry under Mr. Justice Rene Marin. Also, what ether cabinet minister had been given the challenge of presiding over a department whose staff was demoralized and decimated by a politically-motivated move of its headquarters to that delightful, quaint but almost inaccessible and insular piece of territory known as Prince Edward Island? a It is significant, as weil, that Geo- rye Hees has an often vocal consti- tuency of veterans, ready, willing. and able to get the public's eye if there is the slightest hint of injus- tice; and Lest We Forget George Hees had todo it all despite the fact that he nad been out of cabinet many years, and is well past the age when most Canadiansare content to retire from any challengevat all It seems possible to suggest that lan MacKenzie, that irascible old Tory-baiter from the West Coast who was Minister of the Depart- rient for Veterans Affairs since the scraping of the old Department of Soldi r Civi 1 Re-establishment in the 20s, would agree that George Hees des the title as the best -except maybe for the Honorable lan himself Sincerely, H. This is the slogan for the sixth * annual 4-H promotional blitz, The campaign started August 25, and will conclude with National 4H Week November 10-16. During this time finalists of the Premier's - Award (which recognizes outstanding achievement in 4-H) tour the province meeting with the * media to promote 4-H. September is when the 4-H clubs start up again for another year. The hope is that by increasing public awareness of 4-H and what it has to offer new 3 and v leaders may be recruted. There are age limits in 4-H, 10-21 years of age, but there are virtually no limits to what projects 4-H members can get involved in There are approximately 35 different projects in Alberta including Self Determination, where senior members select, develop and carry out their own project. In addition to the number of projects offered, members learn new skills (for example public speaking), responsibility, decision making, and gain some real life experience, all while involved in their projects. It is here where the 4-H motto, Learn to do by doing is evident. An added bonus that. many youth clubs can not claim is that the whole family can be involved in 4-H and is encouraged to do so. With the kids as members and the parents as volunteer leaders or just helping the kids with their project, the family has the chance to do something together, an event which does not seem to be very common these days. The skills and attitudes learned in 4-H and the time spent with family members working on their project will benefit the member even after their involvement in 4-H has ended. during this 1986 4H promotional campaign, if you're interested in becoming a member, a leader, or have an idea for a new club in this area, you can contact District Home Economist Christine Petersen at Box 40 Claresholm or phone 625-3301, and Check out 4-H. te Tourism Modern insurance for today s home owner.
