Presidential Art Medals issued this bronze medal in 1972 as part of its Great Men of Medicine series in honour of S. Weir Mitchell, the father of neurology, founder of the American Neurological Society and co-author of the 1864 book Gunshot Wounds and Other Injuries of Nerves. Mitchell is also author of The Children�s Hour, a children�s book that is can be found in the Mackie Family History of Neuroscience collection.
