In this work Thompson, an otolaryngologist, reported the first case series of spontaneous cerebrospinal fluid leakage, for which he coined the term, "rhinorrhea." He differentiated between cerebrospinal rhinorrhea and nasal rhinorrhea. He did not recommend surgical intervention.
