Bernhard von Gudden's gesammelte und hinterlassene Abhandlungen
This is elephant folio size. A great anatomist, he discovered the partial decussation of the optic nerves in the chiasm. He produced and described the phenomena involved in retrograde degeneration of sectioned nerve tracts. He discovered many tracts especially in the diencephalon and brainstem, some of which bear his name (Gudden's inferior commissure and Gudden's tract). An important contribution was the development of a microtome for whole brain sectioning. This led to his student, Forel's discoveries, which helped to put the Neuron Doctrine on firm ground. The circumstances surrounding Gudden's death have never been clarified and remain a mystery to this day. On June 13, 1886 he was found dead by an unknown cause a few feet from his dead patient, King Ludwig II the "mad king" of Bavaria.
