Remark regarding Mackie Family History of Neuroscience Collection copy: GM 1416. Golgi's single most important work, summarizing his major work from 1973, when he first discovered his reazione nera (black reaction with his silver stain) to his work in the mid 1880s. With gorgeous colored plates of the nervous system (especially the cerebellum and hippocampus), this work established him as the master of neurohistology (until Cajal began his work with the modified Golgi stain in 1888. This is one of the rarest books in the history of neurology. One doesn't know how many copies were published, but the quality of the paper was poor, and few copies survive. In his 1986 catalogue 17 (see which) Jeremy Norman offered a wased, deacidified and mylar laminated copy for $4000. In his catalogue Norman stated that he had never known of a private collector who had a copy of this work, nor had he, himself, ever seen a copy. My copy was in the possession of Fred mettler until I purchased it from him in 1978. mettler had it bound in a buckram binding, intact with printed wrappers bound in. It is remarkably well preserved, except that the creases where the folding plates are folded are fragile. For this reason I had them strengthened with archivel semitransparent paper tape. Otherwise this is a nice copy that can be read and handled (gently).
