Removal of the cerebral hemispheres caused severe disorders of perception and judgement; removal of the cerebellum caused loss of equilibrium and coordination; and removal of the brainstem caused death because of removal of the vital centers. In 1812 Le Gallois had localized the respiratory center to the medulla (see which). Flourens further pinpointed its location within the medulla in this and subsequent work. He was unable to find evidence of finer cerebral localization, feeling that sensation, vision, hearing and intellectual functions were properties of the entire cerebral hemispheres. He was therefore a strong opponent of the localization schemata of Gall. These results stood until more sophisticated localization experiments and observations were done later in the century.
