Green Ravine Winter Harbour
File consists of three drawings on the front and back of two pages that depict Cape Castlereagh, Cape Warrender, Leopold Island. One of the drawings shows five figures on land with the caption, 'Green Ravine, Winter Harbour'. A massive rock rises from the curved, sparse terrain in the foreground. A hill slopes gently to the left. Two figures clothed in long, fur lined coats and warm hats walk around the rock towards a sitting figure who adjusts his boots and watches two bird hunters. Bershad, p. 154, suggests this shows the ravine described in Parry's Journals, 1821, describing a scene from Melville Island, June 12, 1820. 'The head of the Bushnan Cove is one of the pleasantest spots we had yet seen in the Arctic regions, the vegetation being more abundant and forward than another place.' This drawing is from the Parry Expedition, 1819-1820. It is documented in Sonia S. Bershad, 'The Drawings and Watercolours by Rear-Admiral Frederick William Beechey, F.R.S., P.R.G.S. (1796-1856),' Arctic 33.1 (March 1980): [reprint] 150, 127, plate 21, with the account in Parry, 1821, p. 45-46. (see Bershad's bibliography).
