This carbonate rock contains a fossilized colonial coral (red arrows) and bryozoans (blue arrows). The colonial and branching framework of the coral imaged is wonderfuly preserved. Corals are formed by soft-bedded animals called polyps removing calcium carbonate from seawater and secreting a calcareous skeleton they inhabit. Another fossil present in this image is bryozoans - filter-feeding aquatic organisms that live in colonies. They also secrete their skeletons that are either branched or fan-shaped. The bryozoans in this image are branched and exhibit “cellular structure” with each cell being ≤1 mm in diameter. These organisms have a distinct lace-like texture that makes them easily identifiable. Bryozoans have recently diversified and were important sediment producers during the Paleozoic era. The name of this carbonate according to the modified Dunham classification is a coral bafflestone.
