Salt casts
Salt casts, also known as halite pseudomorphs, are distinct preservations of cubic halite crystals in hypersaline environments. This occurs from the formation and dissolution of halite crystals on the sediment floor of a hypersaline body of water, leaving a mold which is infilled by sediment when the water dries. Not only are salt casts characteristically indicative of arid evaporite depositional environments, but can also be used as a paleoindicator for upright orientation as the surface revealing these cast reliefs typically occur on the underside of a bed.
