Block Boudinage
This image depicts dark angular boudins enclosed in a gneiss matrix found in Qinling, Central China. Boudins are extensional structures formed by stretching and fragmenting a competent continuous layer within a less competent matrix, that is more susceptible to plastic deformation. The depicted boudins are characterized as asymmetric boudins. Assymetrical boudins are typical of deformed metamorphic rocks and are formed through small shear fractures. The formation of the boudins by extension or shear fractures are determined by the differential stress of the competent layer. Boudins can often undergo significant rotation, however; in the depicted sample the boudins have undergone minimal rotation as they lie in situ parallel to the foliation of the surrounding rock.
