Afghan Nationalism
While most War Rugs are likely woven for outsiders, there are some that may have greater appeal to Afghans. Rugs woven with the likeness of Ahmad Shah Massoud, for example, like the posters and photographs of this ‘National Hero of Afghanistan' are prized. Considered along with other political portraits and historic monuments, they could suggest a re-bounding nationalism and efforts to recover Afghan history. The collection includes a portrait of the Afghan ruler Amanullah Khan in full military dress. He was a controversial figure during his reign for attempting to introduce a variety of reforms-he was also, however, instrumental in gaining Afghan independence from Britain in 1921. Recalled here, he seems to stand for the nation, resilient and strong. Also in the collection is a long runner featuring the Paghman Gardens among other heritage sites. Amanullah Khan built the gardens in the town of Paghman, near Kabul. It became the site of Mujahidin resistance during the 1990's and today is largely in ruins. The Paghman carpet encapsulates the grandeur and optimism of the original gardens with the devastation of war.
