Erosional formations at Saskatchewan Glacier
Glacial erosion is the carving of the land below a moving ice sheet. Images A through D depict the different results of the Saskatchewan Glacier and its impact on the surrounding land. The assorted till seen in the images is the product of plucking and abrasion of bedrock during glacial retreat. These processes combined with freezefreeze-thawerode the mountains surrounding the glacier and transport and deposit sediment with glacial movement. Image A shows an outwash channel that has become a meandering stream due to drainage of meltwater eroding the walls of the channel, while Image B is a crevasse and shows foliation in the ice. As the glacier moves and interacts with different stresses below, the ice can crack forming crevasses like this one. A crevasse is a crack or opening at the surface of brittle ice. Image C shows how the ice along a bank of the valley has been eroded by running water forming rills. Image D shows several erosional features, including an abandoned channel, sediment deposits along the bank, and assorted till and erratics.
