Conglomerate, Mt. Yamnuska
Conglomerates are siliciclastic rocks that can be classified according to provenance, percent matrix, fabric and clast composition. Clasts are the larger rock fragments within the finer-grained matrix. Rocks that have round to sub-angular clasts are considered conglomerates and rocks with angular clasts are considered breccias. This sample has sub-rounded clasts that vary in composition and size which makes this sample poorly sorted. Samples with clasts that do not appear to be of the same origin as the matrix have extraformational provenance. Percent matrix is a visual judgment of the ratio of clasts to the matrix in a sample. If a sample is composed of less than 15% matrix it is considered an orthoconglomerate and is clast supported. This property is recognizable when the clasts are touching, and the rock would not fall apart if the matrix was removed. The clasts in this sample are composed of mainly quartz and chert, both stable materials, so this sample is also known as oligomictic. Stable materials are those that are most resistant to chemical weathering. The full name for this sample would be a quartz-chert extraformational orthoconglomerate.
