Walter Hill Moodie joined the Canadian Engineers, 1st Canadian Pioneers in Kelowna, British Columbia in September 1915, travelled with them to England in November 1915 and to France in March 1916. The 1st Canadian Pioneers were converted to the 9th Battalion Canadian Railway Troops later that year. Moodie attained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel and succeeded to the command of the Battalion in the summer of 1917. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order in January 1918 and returned to Kelowna in April 1919. Note his overcoat, helmet, gas mask and cane. Inscription on back of photograph: 'Just taken for show. Never wore it except in practice.'
